“@Aportzline: If you're staying up for news on D Nikita Nikitin ... 1) Go to bed. Nothing tonight. 2) Really? #Oilers #CBJ”

Why? Because it's the Oilers?

Likewise, it isn't just Edmonton that has the opportunity here. If anyone else wants to talk to Nikitin (and therefore create a bidding war), they need only to speak with the Jackets.

my point is that the normal way has been for a team to trade an asset for permission to speak to an impending UFA

Now its let me talk to him and if we make a deal then we will give you an asset.

ie Dan Boyle and the Islanders..

This happens all of the time most other teams just don't make a stupid gong show out of it like the Oilers. They only announce something after they have a deal. I believe recently the Flames have done this with Wideman, Knight, and Russell, they at least had permission to talk to the agent before the trade call in all three deals.

Yep this is just the Oilers desperately trying to say to their fans "look we're trying, really we are." Pathetic really!

Nope another poster created it, I can't remember who, and I liked the sound of it, and it matched Kevin Lowe and his whole winning rant, so I keep it. Sorry if you don't like it.

Sounds like the Oilers may sign him:

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
No trade yet between CBJ and EDM but it looks like Nikita Nikitin contract negotiations with EDM headed in the right direction.

Honestly given it's only a 2 year term I can't really find much fault in this deal. Even if he's mediocre he will probably stand out as better than half the defensemen on the roster so it's actually a pretty solid move especially if he plays at a better than average level as money isn't really a big deal for the fanboy owner.

Wow, $4.5M a season??? Who is this guy again? Sorry I guess I don't follow Columbus much the past few seasons. Is he some kind of offensive-minded defenseman? Well, that would really help the Oilers
