"North American sports" fans complaining about soccer fouls...it never ends
I should go onto the all of the basketball threads and complain about charging calls since I don't watch a lot of the sport and can't tell when a defender is planted or moving and interfering with the offensive player who has a lane to the basket.
Or the football threads and complain about pass interference since I can't tell how much contact is allowed, or how much the defender can obstruct the path of a receiver.
Or I can just shut up and admit I don't follow those sports close enough to tell the subtlety that sometimes varies in plays like that.
Do you feel a little more superior now?
Flopping is derided in every sport here. Soccer is only special because it's somehow accepted and people mock you for "not knowing the game" if you don't like it.
Uruguay jumped to Suárez’s defence, with the non-playing captain Diego Lugano sensing conspiracy and accusing Chiellini of being a cry baby. He also suggested that the apparent bite mark on the Italian’s shoulder was an existing scar.
“Did you see it [the bite] today or did you see what happened in other years?” Lugano said. “You couldn’t have seen it today because nothing happened. The worst of everything is the attitude of Chiellini. It doesn’t correspond with Italian football, crying and appealing against a rival. As a man, he disappointed me totally. I had him as a reference point. You have to be stupid to think that mark on Chiellini is from today.”

Everyone knows soccer has too much flopping; no one accepts it.
But coming into a soccer thread and complaining about foul calls, that most soccer fans would actually consider correct calls and saying the sport is a joke; is just trolling.
My examples are just to demonstrate and anyone could do that about any sport they don't follow closely.
It's not mocking anyone for "not knowing the game"; it's mocking those who "don't want to know the game" but just want to complain about it anyway.
It's no different than people who say hockey is a bunch of guys who run around trying to take each other's heads off and then fight all game.
If that's all you try to see in the sport, than you're clearly not trying to know the game.
Location: In a land without pants, or war, or want. But mostly we care about the pants.
Exp:
The diving has definitely been toned down this World Cup. Getting tripped at full speed knocks people down, the reason you don't see it in north american football is that for for one, it's a penalty, and for two, you're allowed to just hit the guy with your body instead. Still everyone that complains how easily guys go down should go take a run out in the park and have some friends randomly run after you and stick their feet into your path if you think it's so easy to stay vertical. Oh, and make sure you're pushing a soccer ball ahead of you so you're concentrating on that and not how you're going to avoid someone tripping you up.

There's a difference between deriding flops and crying about refereeing because you don't understand the rules and the game. We get the latter a lot in these threads.
There is also a difference between crying about dives and denouncing the most popular sport in the world as "ridiculous" because of them.
People being all "soccer sucks" in threads where other people come to talk about the World Cup is really just dickish behaviour. If people want to talk about how much soccer sucks, they can start a thread about it. At the very least it would be nice if those people could keep that stuff away from the GDT:s.
I doubt the Stampeders thread or the PGA thread or the Tennis thread have people constantly coming in to whine about what ever they think is wrong with those sports.

As for the Suarez incident it certainly looked like he bit him. I love watching him play but I think he has just gone too too far this time. I would have more respect if he just punched or headbutted Chielini.

But the only people who hold the bolded opinion are people who have never watched more than 30 second of hockey in their life. Most people have seen enough soccer and what was seen today was pretty normal, if disappointing. Soccer is a lot like the NBA, far too often referees and not the players decide the game. What do we love about playoff hockey? That the refs let the players decide the games and swallow the whistles. If every game were like Germany-Ghana, that'd be great. Unfortunately refereeing is often too big a factor in games.
Penalties are virtually goals (they're probably converted at an 85-90% rate), so I just think the criteria to get them should be very difficult and not as close as we just saw. Or maybe move the ball back to make penalties more difficult. But the game was over the second the penalty was called, many Greek players acted like they had won, and that was before the kick was even taken. It's very disappointing to see a game end like that.
North American sports fans don't watch much soccer, we all know it. So naturally they don't like it when the game appears like this, because we're not used to it. But like anything else though, soccer fans are used to it, so they accept it. I've thought the NBA is illegitimate for a while yet still watch, because I've accpeted that it is what it is. Some people will never get it either.

Rules are rules. If you trip someone up in the box it's a penalty. Maybe the penalties aren't so major in hockey but that's the way it is.
Do you want us to change the rules for North Americans ?

This isn't what I like about playoff hockey. I hate this about playoff hockey when it happens and honestly it renders the NHL a bit of a joke that the rules change depending on the time of season, or who's playing who, or what the score is, or how much time is left.
Call the damned rules.
What occurred was a foul. Had the foul not occurred there was a strong likelihood Greece would have scored and gone through. And you wanted it not called? What, so the wrong team would win? I do not understand.

Absolutely, the best playoffs in all of sports is a joke because the rules are called a little more loosely
You were cheering for Greece, of course you loved the call. I'm not even saying it wasn't a foul. I just think that it's a ####ty way to end a game.

Exactly. Hockey(especially NHL) is the only sport I know that has flexible rules. Maybe that's why it has failed to attract fans outside of Canada.
This is what makes soccer great, every second of the 90 minutes is important and is treated equally.
From Dempsey scoring 30 seconds into the game to Bradley losing the ball 30 seconds from the end of the game. Or Iran bravely defending for 90 minutes only to leave Messi an extra yard of space and paying for it. A lack of concentration at any point of the 90 minutes will kill you.
Or a last minute penalty. Just cause it's the last minute, you can't just trip someone cause the refs won't want to decide the game. A penalty is a penalty, whenever it occurs.
Why is it in soccer nothing happens but people can't take their eyes off it for a second? Cause anything can happen at anytime. Goals, corners, cards, penalties, anything.

I don't want to change the rules. But if you wonder why North Americans put soccer squarely in the niche sport category (and to be fair, so is hockey in America), well this is why. It's so much about North American fans "not getting it", it's about them not liking it.

So you watch sports for proper interpretation of the rules? Alrighty then. I prefer watching the players determine the outcome but thats just me

No, the playoffs are great. This particular aspect of them is laughable. Thankfully, the other virtues of the SCP make up for that failing, which only rears its ugly head on occasion.

True, I'm biased. I don't see how it was a ####ty way to end a game, though - a dramatic all or nothing kick with everything riding on it? This is like saying a penalty shot in overtime is a ####ty way to end a game.

Saying that the referee decided the game today is really the equivalent of saying that the referee decides a game when he calls a ball out of bounds in tennis.
Or saying that really the field should be bigger because there's too many balls out of bounds.
Also;
2010 World Cup playoffs, Uruguay-Ghana. End of extra time, game tied. Effectively the same situation, put it in and you advance.
