Looks like he hurt his prize weapons in the attack.

Thanked for the bolded part. Some of my buddies are adamant that it was intent to injure and 100% a red. Sigh.

Seeing some talk of a lifetime ban. Maybe a bit extreme but he certainly does not deserve the benefit of the doubt.

no need for a lifetime ban IMO, but it should be a lengthy suspension ... like 10-15 games.

I don't think it's "empty machismo" to expect the pros to not flop like out of water fish. The Italians brought their "A" diving game and the Uraguaians (sp?) were up to the challenge. It's epidemic. That was a pretty brutal display.

So would that be across all competitions or just for his national team?

It would be across all competitions.

It's now his 3rd biting offence, so as a "repeat offender" I would expect maybe 25 games. Maybe even a season.

At Man United in the past, Cantona was banned for 8 months for attacking a fan, and Rio Ferdinand the same length for missing a drugs test.

So a ban of that length wouldn't necessarily be out of the question.

Need any more examples?

Sorry there is no comparison to hockey here.
Yes its soccer, or football, maybe even futball, but not hockey. That's a different sport, not sure why people have to keep comparing it, hey i love hockey and all the rough stuff but this is a different game, take it for what it is.

I have no problem with wanting players to not cheat and/or bend the rules. (Even though "if you're not cheating, you're not trying" has some truth to it.)

It is however empty machismo if you think it has something to do with "manning up". Hockey is just filled with that kind of language and "logic". It's very tiresome to listen to.

Thanks for pretty much underlining my point

(That's not to say that soccer is free of irritating machismo. But hockey is far worse. And that's enough about this for me for now.)

Marchismo definitely deserved the red, and from a neutral standpoint that kicked off the game. The Italians once again played for a zero or one goal win and they have been bitten(maybe not literally...) before. When they had a great team and the home game advantage in 1990, they insisted on packing in a one goal lead in the semi final and lost.

A one goal lead is never safe. With regards to Suarez, he went over the line again, a shame but his world cup is over.

I wasnt even comparing it to hockey. I guess I expect men to act as such regardless of the sport they are playing.

Maybe I am alone on that.

Unfortunately when you watch soccer, far more often the wrong thing (flopping/diving/embellising) gets rewarded while the right thing never does. I think the refs deserve as much blame for the level of flopping as the players. When you more often than not give a call for a dive and rarely punish diving, it's simply encouraging it.

What drives me the most crazy about diving in soccer is the times that the player dives away a good opportunity. Where he had his man beat, he had space, he just needed to stay on his feet and he dives. Infuriating.

Is that coming from the heights of the moral high ground? I suggest golf or tennis then.
