Re: Bennett and pull ups...
From what I understand, you only had three opportunities to do the pull-up correctly. If you didn't do it to their specifications, any of the pull-ups you could do would not count. If this is indeed the case, then perhaps Bennett didn't do the pull-ups to their specifications and was disqualified, or counted as 'zero'. There are a number of factors can come into play, including communication, technique and human error.
It is now because of this hoopla that I (although previously undecided) am cheering for the Flames to get Bennett. That and because I think he is what this organization needs.

I don't know how this turned into another "Bennett can't do a pullup" thread, but I'll play along.
That wasn't the case. Bennett could not do a pullup at the combine. He can do them now, but at the time he could not. It wasn't an issue with technique, he just couldn't do it.

Hate to derail the Sam Bennett thread here with Ryan Howse talk but while Howse's agent looks to have broken this news, the Thunder themselves have not acknowledged it. In fact, there as a twitter posting AFTER the agent announcement that another player was their first off season signing. The website has the new player on, but Howse is not listed on the roster anywhere or in the news.
The ECHL also does not have record of this transaction yet.

Then I am misinformed... Thank you for the correction. Regardless, the pull-ups were a new thing this year. I don't think I'd be able to do a pull-up either if my legs had the mass that his do! Mind you, I'm not sure I can do a pull-up with the mass of my own legs... So there's that. But luckily my job doesn't require me to do pull-ups like his does.
Count me on board for Sam going fourth over all!

When I was 17 I couldn't do a pull up either but most of my muscle mass was in my legs from playing hockey. I think it's more Bennets leg mass that is the issue as he seems to have natural strength and will be a good nhler. It that sneaky strength that is most effective, Like Robyn Regehr, he's not the biggest dude or lifts the heaviest weights but has massive natural strength.

Stockton now makes it official: http://www.stocktonthunder.com/2014/...-howse-signed/
Quote:
“I took the season off to rediscover my passion for the game,” Howse said. “I had the opportunity to coach at the youth level and it reminded me how much I love the game and that I was meant to be a hockey player. I’m very excited for October to come!”

“Ryan had a difficult time adjusting to life as a pro and lost a bit of motivation,” Kromm said. “He’s hungry to play again and, for us, it’s worth giving him a second chance to see what he can do.”

Just weird to me.

I'd be surprised if that was the case, maybe you're thinking of chin-ups?

Who really cares about his ability to do a pull up? What benefit does a pull up have on a players performance? Probably not much as it wasn't something tested at the combine.
He will probably do nothing but pulls ups all summer now and will probably end up being able to do more of them than most of the other players did at the combine

Can we seriously drop the pull up thing? I came to read about Ryan Howse, if people wanted to read about the pull ups they can go back to the 10+ pages in the combine thread because it already has identical content people are posting here.
Regarding Bennett's pull ups- yes it's weird, no it probably won't affect his game, we don't know enough to judge his character from this, it probably has to do with his leg mass, it probably has to do with more time playing hockey than in the weight room, this has all already been discussed to death in the combine thread.
It's getting more annoying than Jankowski's law (well maybe not).

Regardless getting your under-roos in a twist about it seems really odd.
I really don't care if he can do a pull up or not. I care what he does on the ice.

Huh? Did you even read what I wrote? I think you are taking what I wrote out of context and it seems you're the one getting your under-roos in a twist here.
I was defending Bennett saying Bennett is fit and that "Bennett is a young kid who simply might be lacking behind others in terms of weight room training. Maybe nobody got him to do body weight exercises. More likely, he didn't have enough time to work out in the weight room and grow his muscles given the games and minutes he plays." You read what I wrote and suggested that maybe Bennett simply wasn't aware and didn't prepare for the specific technique mandated. I responded by saying that if he didn't know the combine's requirements that's all on him because as far as I know, the tests required and how the tests are done is no secret. A top prospect like Bennett should be well informed if not, either his agent failed him or Bennett didn't pay attention.
Again, I simply think your suggestion that Bennett wasn't aware that he needed to do a pull up and what the mandated technique was as unlikely, because I think it would be utterly stupid of Bennett to not have been aware. And I am not sure if you work out, but the pullup prospects had to do seems like a classic pullup to me. And while there may be many variations of the pull up, if you can do 2-3 pullups in one variation, there is no way you have such trouble getting up the way Bennett did. Bennett now says he can do at least two. Essentially he lacks upper body strength that's all it means. Regardless, I am done with this. You can read things the way you want to read it.
