so the flyers trade a winger for a center.
They already have:
giroux
couturier
lecavlier
they also have schenn (who i think shifted to wing last year) and then arguably their best prospect in laughton who they may want to give a look.
is it obvious to assume there's another move coming involving moving out one of their existing centers?
Or does umberger no longer play C??

Umberger has been playing wing for the last few years.
He can play any forward position really.

Umberger is a LW. The trade just doesn't make sense.
The Flyers save 100k and get a 4th. Not really anything special.

It makes alot of sense when you read Aussie's post. They need to sign some important players in a couple years, this move helps them do that and doesn't significantly downgrade them. Sure Hartnell's the better player but it isn't a huge chasm between the two especially if Philly's younger players continue to pick up the slack and emerge.

I suppose... However, I think the trade doesn't make as much sense as it should. So, over the course of 3 years, Philly saves 300k and gets just a 4th round pick. They could have easily pried a 2nd out of Columbus. They are both of the same age, but Hartnell is the better player. Philly got hosed.

As pointed out on twitter the Flyers really need a top 6 LWer now... Umberger likely won't cut it.

Philly also saves about 9.5 M in cap space over the last two years of Hartnell's contract. Hartnell is definitely the better player but I think CBJ willing to take on that contract when Hartnell is 36 and 37 is why Philly made the deal.

I would like to see us trade Glencross to them.

Goofy trade from Philly's perspective. Umberger isn't a bad player, but he's not close to Hartnell now, nor is he likely to be at any point in the future. Saving a couple years down the line might make sense if the Flyers were planning on a rebuild now, but that isn't the case either.

Decent trade for both teams. Jackets gets the best player, but this saves Philly some cash over the long run and lessens the logjam at Center that the Flyers had, while adding an additional pick to their arsenal.
I like it.

Terrible for the Flyers. A buyout would have been better than taking Umberger.

Huh? If they were planning to be in a rebuild in three years, then they'd want to hang on to Hartnell because the cap implications for those years wouldn't matter, and in the mean time he's the better player.

Seems like a terrible trade for Philly. I know that Flyers fans are pretty confused.

Flyers fans must be choked.
Significantly downgrade your top six left wing for a 4th round pick?

I think this trade was made to save themselves down the road.. Hartnell's play is declining and by the time that Umburgers contract is up (3 years) Hartnells 4.7 cap hit will be a large burden. It will get increasingly harder to trade him for "fair" value as that contract goes on.

Wonder if something around Sven for Schenn would work?
Sven is an ELC LWer that would potentially step into their top 6 and whose style would be better suited in the Eastern Conference.
Schenn is still developing two way center, but is an RFA that Philly cannot afford to give a raise to.
Maybe we add another sweetener and take Luke Schenn as a cap dump too.

I don't watch Philly play enough to comment on Hartnell. Maybe his play was regressing rapidly, dunno.
