If you think Grandlund, Jankowski, and Backlund are good enough to win you a championship, I really don't think you have an understanding of the game like you seem to think you do.

I am honestly just excited we're gonna have a Monahan + Bennett/Draisaitl/Reinhart combo down the middle. Regardless of who we pick, we significantly improve our center depth. Just thinking that after we make our pick, a lot of teams are going to be envious about our young centers is weird as a Flames fan. I wish there was a time machine option as a fan, and you could just glimpse into the future to see who you pick or how prospects are developing... I wouldn't go back and prevent wars or anything, just take a sneak peak to see how Gaudreau is handling a full season in the NHL etc.
If no picks are traded though, it certainly looks like Bennett will be ours. Can you imagine that in a few years? If Monahan and Bennett both reach or get close to their potential ceilings, we could have the most well-rounded 1-2 punch in the league. As much as I would love a Bergeron (Reinhart) or Kopitar (Draisaitl) + Toews (Monahan) combo, a Toews/Toews combo seems like it would be a cup magnet.

How do you know what Jankowski will become? He could be the next Joe Thornton even, nobody knows yet. I think it might be you who lacks the understanding of prospects here.

From Shane Malloy's The Art of Scouting:
Quote:
In Keith Gretzky's opinion, the other independent scouting operations aren't a particularly useful tool for scouting departments; however, he views NHL Central Scouting differently as he knows their criteria, work ethic, and accountability.
"It's just like video in that it's a tool. You try to keep up to where guys are rated, but everybody has a different opinion. I think NHL Central Scouting can be a useful tool in identifying players and making sure our guys see them. Those guys at NHL Central Scouting work extremely hard and they are just like they belong to a team."
Trevor Timmins agrees that NHL Central Scouting is the one they can rely on.
"I think the only one that's used is NHL Central Scouting, and that helps us with the identification process. I don't think the independent scouting services are used very often; they're another media source."

Not certain that Keith Gretzky and Trevor Timmins speak for the entire NHL.
Any team/individual that doesn't use every source/tool available does the players' as well as fans of any team a disservice, and are certainly more like the Oilers than the Kings

Just to try and infuse some new discussion into this topic, wondering what your reactions would be if we used our two seconds on forwards? I know it seems unlikely as the 2nd/3rd rounds are littered with defensemen, but say Treliving and the scouting staff truly just went BPA and those happened to both be forwards... good? Bad? Indifferent? I for one think we would definitely have some bullets in the chamber in terms of top-six forwards, although I am certainly banking on the seconds and thirds being used to breathe some life into our defensive prospect pool.

Doesn't really matter as long as we get quality players. Usually I'm not a fan of goalies before the 3rd round but I wouldn't mind if the Flames used one of their 2nds on that Thatcher Demko kid to be honest.

True. One exception would be the Oilers, who of course use the Hockey News exclusively to make their picks. Granted, they're not really an NHL team.

There are some interesting forward prospects who could be available in the 2nd round. Nikita Scherbak, Eric Cornel, Nic Goldobin, Conner Bleackley, Brendan Lemieux, Ryan MacInnis and even Hunter Smith should be worthy of consideration if they're still on the board. There are loads of defensive options as well as some interesting goalie prospects too so I hope Treliving goes with the BPA.

This is a sensible approach to take. Who knows who will fall to pick #34. Take the one you have highest on your list.

Have you ever heard of KISS? Teams have their own scouts who form their own opinions. It's not necessary at all for them to "use" every source/tool available. It's all about using the right tool.

3 prospects with top 6 potential and are nowhere near done getting better. Who knows what Janko will become. I think we should wait before we discount 2 prospectswith top 6 potential and a top 6 centre already that's still young

I think Smith amd one of Lemieux and MacInnis will be available. Don't like either of those options

That said, I can confirm there are a handful of NHL teams that have shelled out money for our (Future Considerations) 2014 NHL Draft Guide.
There's nothing wrong with going over all the data from outside sources to make sure there's something they aren't missing.

I'm of the same mind ATM. If Gaudreau can developed into anything close to a Patty Kane, Monahan anywhere between a Seguin and Teows and our new guy coming in being anything close to who they are compared to, the Flames will absolutely have one of the brightest futures of top 6 out of anyone in the league.
Add Poirier and Beartschi developing into what we think they might be, then we have serious hope for the future.
Add in Klimchuck, if he can get passed his recent injury issues, Granlund continuing to improve, Knight coming along, and if Ferland starts seeing NHL time. We could have the deepest pool of top 9 players in the NHL in 2 years time.
Gaudreau
Monahan
Beartschi
Bennett, Reinhardt, Draisaitl
Porier
Granlund
Knight
Ferland
Klimchuck
Jankowski
Agostini
Arnold
-------------
Add top 9 ready in
Bouma
Byron
----------
If 1/3 of these guys hit their mark which is absolute IMO. The Flames are really solid going forward and should just stand-pat with their draft position. Don't move any assets to move up. Don't try and gain anymore by moving down. Take the BPA at 4.
Defense can be sorted in later rounds and through other means. Goaltending can be acquired with 1st rounders if need be when they are picking between 20-30. (Absolute worst case scenario)

I still think we are going to see one of the the forwards* traded in a draft day move where we take on salary for prospect(s)/pick(s).
*Excluding Monahan. (After him, i have no idea how Treliving stacks up the others).
