Both Italy and Uruguay have 3 points
Goal Difference:
Italy are 2-2 = 0
Uruguay are 3-4 = -1
Therefore Italy only needs a draw against Uruguay in the last game to advance.
This is why Italy were defending their 1-0 deficit. If Italy tied the game it would have made no difference. If they gave up another goal they would have been 2-3 = -1 and it would have been them who would have to win the last game.
With a draw Italy could have still won the group, no? I have to think they still wanted that goal, they just knew above all else they couldn't give up another.

True, but a lot more likely had they gotten a point today.
Now they need:
-Italy Win
-Costa Rica Loss
-GD of both games > +3 combined for Italy, or +4 depending on goals for
If they had gotten a point:
-Italy win and Costa Rica Draw or Loss
OR
-Italy win and Costa Rica win with GD of both games > +2 combined for Italy, or +3 depending on goals for
OR
-Italy draw and Costa Rica loss
It would take a pretty crazy final day to see Italy on top now, where they would have put their fate at least somewhat in their hands with a point.
Yup but I don't think the Italians really believe they can beat Uruguay so better to go in just needing a draw than having to win. To a so-called big team like Italy, 1st or 2nd doesn't really matter.
It was really hot, don't think they could take a chance going to the draw.
