If it wasn't for the future cap recapture penalties would they have bought him out?

Perhaps not, but he would have been burried in their system over time. Same principal stands.

Brad Richards is about to be the richest player in the NHL when someone signs him to like 4.5 million dollar contract on top his buyout money.

Say what you want about his sucky playoffs but he woulda helped the Flames. He's still a 50 pt. player, and during the Iginla days, would've made a decent enough center. The Flames have been missing a consistent 50 pt. center since Langkow left.
That being said, the contract with the Flames, had he signed, would've handcuffed the team for a long time. He'd be overpaid by about $4M a year, but he'd still be our best center even today.

It makes little sense, basically being rewarded for underachieving.
These GMs have to be smarter.

He has signed some awful deals but somehow he came out smelling like roses for most of them. If the league didnt allow for compliance buyouts after both lockouts he would have ran the team into the ground

Even then, I don't understand how the owners allow him to waste so much money.

Yeah, these compliance buy outs have saved Sather's a$$.
Either he's a genius because he somehow knew they'd become available, or he's one lucky SOB.
You gotta think though, blowing that much money on buy outs must leave a sour taste in the owners mouth regardless, no? Or is that not a big deal to NYR owner?

I don't think anyone no matter how rich is ok with just giving away that many millions.

Richards will receive two-thirds of the remaining money to be paid out over 12 years — a total of $12.6 million.
Richards will also be paid $8 million in signing bonuses over the next three seasons.

Sure we dodged a bullet but we didn't come away completely unscathed. IIRC the reason we traded Regehr was to get the cap room to sign Richards. Great plan there Feaster.

He saves himself every year by making some sick trades. I'd hire Sather to be my GM but give him July 1st off every year.

Being able to flip Gomez for anything was a miracle let alone landing McDonagh.
