Pretty mellow here at the moment. Although it is tough to say what the fallout will be. The Kurds have taken back Kirkuk in the confusion and I believe this will be looked at as an act of aggression by either party (ISIS or the Iraqi govt) when this all plays out.

Oh shoot, I forgot to mention. The main refinery in Iraq shut down. Basically cutting Kurdistan off of gasoline.
The line up to get gas or diesel at a gas station is at the moment, 200 cars deep on average at any gas station. It's looking like Kurdistan will be out of gas and diesel within 3-4 days.
Gonna make life verrry interesting.

Another Calgary resident has gone to join jihad in Iraq. Farah Mohamed Shirdon has been found speaking on ISIS footage, and makes a threat to Canada and the U.S. Burned his Canadian passport too.

Weirdly enough, his uncle is the former Prime Minister of Somalia, who has had numerous attempts on his life by Al-Shabab.

I think there's a bit more of a culture of money here than some other Canadian cities. When you feel like you can't achieve what everyone else around seems to have, you lash out.
Just talking out my ass of course in a more cultural sense. Someone in law enforcement or anti-terrorism might just say we have more groups preaching or practicing here for some reason.
As for the problem, I'm not sure how I feel about it. I mean it's sad, and a little worrisome. On the other hand it's good they're not planning local things. I guess the biggest reason to worry about it would be that they might want engage in terrorism locally one day.
Whoops! Meant to quote WastedYouths question.

Watching the cycle on CBC this morning about this recruit. A lot of questions, not many answers, though it does seem like there is a 'cell' of some sort that is radicalizing these young men, this being the sixth person to come out of a known group here. Though the mosque (proper term?) this young man belonged to actually has been involved in outreach and programs to prevent such things from happening.

A spoiled rich kid who didn't get enough love and direction from his parents. OR got rejected by a girl when he was in high school.
The police really need to start clamping down on this, it seems like they're part of one group and they have to have a pattern by now of where these thugs worshiped and who they talked to.
Hopefully Canada doesn't lift in a finger to help him if he gets captured or injured.
Or sets the condition that the only way that he gets into this country is if he spends the rest of his pathetic life in a 8x6 cell.

Well lets see, his old man was the former Prime Minister of Somolia, his family is described as prominent and heavily involved in the community.
The kid was probably spoiled and lived a life of privileged until some wacky recruiter convinced him that he was leading a life of sin and his punishment was going to be eternal, but there was a short cut to paradise, plus he was rich and bored and he could have an adventure. Oh and the 72 virgins.
Plus like a lot of these foot soldiers to Allah, they're not smart or accustomed to thinking for themselves, they're what Stalin called useful idiots.

out of interest is there a federal agency to deal with terrorism/extremism in Canada?
Or is each individual police force investigating these nutjobs and their background?
The Syrian (and Iraqi now) conflict is already blowingback in europe, cells are being detained and arrested across Europe for ISIS recruiting stations etc.

I think there's a working group between CSIS, RCMP and local law enforcement. I don't think that there's one pure anti-terror group out there.

There's a serious backlash happening in Europe in terms of their immigration policy. I know England is going to take a serious look at how these radical groups are getting in and radicalizing their communities.
We might find doors slamming shut in Europe over the next few years.

Europe's immigration problem is largely a segregation problem though. They ignored the benefits of integration until it was too late. Canada hasn't had that problem yet, but we need to stay on top of it.

I don't think its enforced segregation though. A lot of these immigrant communities impose segregation on themselves and have little interest in integrating into their new societies. As well its starting to sound like the radicals in those communities have taken control of the schools and religion there.
The only way around that is forced integration, where you don't allow them to form communities, but dictate where they can live. Or you have the governments taking firm control of the schools and providing oversight into the curriculum.

I think they probably encouraged and desired segregation at the start, but no, they didn't enforce it. The radicalization came over time as an unintended consequence.
I don't think Europe, mainly France, can fix this problem at this point, and if it starts tilting that way in Canada, I'm not sure what we can do either. People want to be with others of their culture and language, and that's totally understandable, but in the end, you're choosing to move to another country, and allowing yourself to be exposed the views and customs of that country is critical. Your neighbourhood being an echo chamber, eventually pushing more and more extreme, is a nightmare.

Well there's a difference between enforcing segregation and encouraging integration. Take France for example. While you (Captain) might be right in saying they didn't ENFORCE segregation, a lot of their policies did nothing to encourage integration, which is necessary.
Part of the reason immigrants end up self segregating is because they aren't given the tools, programs, or nudge to integrate. As well as face racial tensions that cause them to retreat to what they know.

It seems like there was a cell operating out of that tower in downtown that also has a Mosque at it's ground level. These guys seemed to have met there (several lived there) often. Most of these people were all going to school and living more or less regular lives just a few years ago but something/someone must have been the catalyst or their grouping created some critical mass for this.
