Was this because he didn't like the Colborne trade or it was just a general embargo because of his rebuilding plan?
I always thought Burke had his hands all over the Colborne deal.

It was the latter (the discussion was about the importance of draft picks, not Colborne trade itself).

It's top 4 top 4 top 4 for everybody but Burke.

Everybody but Burke?
Didn't Trevelling mention a top 5 himself?
Seems like the fanbase is the one obssessed with size and constantly trying to paint Burke with that brush even though his words and actions show that isn't true at all.

To add to this, wasn't it previously mentioned in this thread that Treliving has the final say on player personnel decisions and the Burke is there for a guiding hand & advice. That if Treliving and Burke have differing opinions, Burke will let Treliving know his reservations, but it's Treliving's call in the end.

It's a real head scratcher to me that you say Burke's words haven't reflected an obsession with size after the last few months, we've heard how the team needs to get bigger pretty often.
I just find it ridiculous that the flames are the only source I've read out of every draft review, scouting consensus list and interviews with other teams/GMs that have called it a top 5, and they call it a consensus top 5. Seems like the opposite of consensus when you are the only one who thinks something. Maybe they just mean internally.

Doesn't it seem like a GOOD idea to trade away lottery tickets for players that have developed a bit more? At least when they're a bit older you get a better idea of their development path and likelihood of making the show. I like the odds better under those circumstances rather than a shiny new toy that has a lesser chance of making it.

You'll get journeymen for your picks but you won't be getting players like Brodie. We need more Brodie's to take this team forward. Later on when you're making a run for the cup, trading picks for a journeyman or two to fill the gaps is okay.

He's returning to college because he's a goalie not because of any other factors. What good would it do him coming up to the AHL/ECHL to play 15 games a year?
He's one of the most promising goalie prospects in the league at this point so I wouldn't knock him over a pedestrian second half. Its a long road to hoe when you talk about developing a goalie within your system.

Yeah you'd think we're talking about a non-profit organization that can barely pay the rent.
Quick fix burkie - tell the owners to step up and dust the mothballs off of one of the offshore accounts.

They do it because it works. Flames will get some government hand outs for their new rink. I'd be shocked if they don't.

Yes, sadly it does seem to work. Nobody wants to listen to millionaires/billionaires whine about not having a nice enough play place when they're choosing to not pay for it themselves.

I find it very hard to believe Edwards and the Flames LP couldn't fart out the cost of this building in their sleep but instead choose to weasel valuable funding away from other areas in dire need.

For government, 250 blue rings is a new Stadium, so thats why the owners look to the government.

I don't mean journeymen, I mean players of Colborne's ilk. Young players that just haven't gotten their chance yet, or have been buried in depth charts. I'd gladly give up a 4th-5th pick every year for a player like that.

Very interesting:
Quote:
N. Murray Edwards derives most of his fortune from stakes in Canadian oil and mining companies but his net worth climbed $250 million from a year ago in part because of a jump in the value of his estimated 30% stake in the Calgary Flames hockey team. Forbes valued the team at $420 million in 2013, up 70% from the prior year.

The bolded is fantastic news.

I'm not knocking him, just repeating what I heard, which seems to coincide with what Burke said.

They have also talked about re-signing Cammy, how Sven can fit into this team if he puts in the right effort/mindset, that Gaudreau definitely has a spot with the organization and if he earns a spot can play on the Flames team.
Burke thinks the team needs to get harder to play aginst and tougher. He hasn't said that means size and only size. Many teams in the league want to do the same thing, especially after watching the Kings run in the Cup and most fans on here seem to agree with Burke that the team needs to get bigger, stronger, tougher.
Wanting the team to improve on an area of weakness is far from an obsession and his words have shown that he isn\t only not obsessed with size but fine with guys making the team that are small or even tiny.

Interesting Fact: I learned first hand that Calgary Flames ownership in its entire history has not withdrawn a single dollar of team profits for their personal income.
