This. Everytime I see graffiti, it looks a pack of Bubblicious gum. It looks like it was done by some 8 year old on crack.

Two things though... Firstly, a street artist respects the art of others. Absolutely. Even taggers generally follow this basic rule. For someone to tag over a mural is vandalism. Period. And generally deplorable to everyone except the tagger. Secondly, Calgary has the worst taggers and graffiti artists in the world. It looks like the scribbling of a 3 year old. Even hardcore gangbangers in L.A. and N.Y. have enough skill that you can sort of make out a word, or a picture of some sort. And they a least have a reason for doing it. There is no West Hillhurst Mafioso, as far as I can tell, and they are not at war with the Bridgeland Fighting Walruses.
I am sorry, I can't agree with that.

I care. If we had an artist of Banksy's quality going around tagging buildings with things and creating installations without permission it would improve the city. This does not.

In any event I am encouraged to see that Captain Crunch continues to lead CP's merry band of revenge fantasy masturbationists. No, it would not be good for vandals to be sodomized with their tools. It would be good if they were arrested and fined.

I continue to wonder how hard it would be to prevent this in this particular spot... These locations - the Memorial monument, Oak Tree, 10th st in general are a fairly small area. I feel like a dozen or so well placed cameras would go a long way here. Maybe people object to surveillance on basic principle though, which is understandable. Ironically...

Spoiler!

Historians have gleaned a lot of information about the daily life of certain ancient civilizations from what is effectively graffiti. I can't help but wonder what future historians will see when they examine the ruins of Calgary.

See I disagree.

Artist, IMO, opinion are asked to do works on buildings, which I am fine with, I like some of the art.

Vandals, deface buildings without permission.

Finally, and I hope you agree, there is no excuse or reason to do this to a War Memorial.

Mountain Equipment Co-op has not figured out yet that barbwire fencing does the trick - the white building half a block down with the probably-salivating open canvas wall is blocked with a barbwire fence and it never gets tagged. Either MEC is lazy, or the store owners like to represent, yo.

I agree, defacing a War Memorial deserves far more than just a fine. It's an insult to the people who gave their lives for our country. Proof that the taggers in Calgary are idiots, and not an artist among them.

On Banksy, and his level of artistry... There are installations by Banksy that are worth so much money that the owners of the buildings are tearing down the walls in order to sell the art at auction. His art can actually be worth more than the value of the building itself, and he asks for nothing but credit in return.

There is amazing work being done, mostly in the States and Europe. None of it here. Can you imagine coming to work one day and finding an original Picasso on the side of your building, or our generations equivalent? It happens in other cities. Here we get this crap. It's offensive.

As for the 'reason for doing it'... in a gang culture its a sign that if you sell drugs in our territory we will shoot you in the face, or some such important community message. I didn't say the reason was a good one.

I am in the camp of being able to appreciate some of the well done graffiti that people throw up here and there.

This ####, I am not cool with.. neighbours car last week.

People that do this kind of thing as well as some of the random scribblings all over the city, need to be put down.
