Unbearable homers should be removed from PBP. I mean, yes you can be excited about your team after a great play but you've got to be objective with your calls and keep the game calling itself even keel and exciting for any fan (including opposition fans) that may be tuning in. There shouldn't be any personal feelings involved in describing plays. It's just professional.

The Sharks and Avs guys are the absolute worst for that.

I suppose on a technical level you are correct but from the standpoint of being a Flames fan, I would very much prefer listening to broadcasters who are fans also cheering for my home town team. I feel extremely nostalgic when listening to calls by Peter Mahr or Ed Whalen when they were excited and passionate about the event happening in Flames history at that moment. My hope would be whoever takes over on TV and radio, either was or is a Flames fan and doesnt look at it as just a job but that's only my personal opinion and preference.

When either of Maher or Whalen called a goal, one would be hard pressed to know which team scored.

In addition, a game 7 overtime goal sounded very much like a 9-1 goal.

But I guess that's what makes them legends.

Bang on. His season on HNIC was unbearable and all he ever talked about was the Sharks.

Using that one video clip to try to prove your point, when it's the rare exception, doesn't prove anything.

funny, I was just listening to him and thinking how he was very competent but just didn't have 'it' enough to carry a show. Maybe he'll grow into it

I remember heckling him in the PL during the Flames and Sharks playoff series for being such a homer.

Again nothing personal but to me you're sounding very naive in your above post since that YouTube link proves everything to what i was referring to. In that moment everyone can tell that Peter Maher was a Flames fan and cared that the team won. Sure he showed more excitement in that clip then in a regular season game against the Preds but isn't that to be expected? Winning in game 7 wouldn't you want the person calling it to be excited? This is only my personal opinion but I don't understand whats wrong with wanting "our" PBP guy to want "our" team to win?

Probably the most intense OT goal call of all time.

Just be grateful we don't have to deal with these guys.

That is a bit of cherry picking since it was the biggest Flames goal in about 15 years.

I regularly have Flames radio brodcasts on in the background while I do other things. Many times I've heard a goal call and thought the Flames had scored only to find out it was the opposition. I don't mind that Maher tried to broadcast the game as opposed to just the Flames perspective of the game the majority of the time.

Bang on.

Josh Humphries has all kinds of potential, but....he simply is beyond unlistenable right now. At least the way they are using him.

I understand how difficult the radio gig can be...i did it at one point many years ago, but I also understood my limitations. he doesnt. Not his fault mind you...this falls on Kirsch for putting JH in this position.

I swear to god...and this was just a couple days ago, he will use the term "as well" more than 30 times an hour. I put it out on this board a couple months back...I dare anyone to take a shot of any liquor of their choice every time its uttered...and be able to walk after 90 minutes. It wont happen.

He is over his head...he knows it, Kirsch knows it, his co-hosts know it, but nothing gets done about it. Its kind of sad.

Humphries could use a stint in Andronack to learn how to depictate things better.

I actually don't mind him in small doses. Him and Steinberg tend to go off the rails a bit though.

That's fine, but at the same time that DOES NOT accurately describe Drew Remenda's colour repertoire. Remenda is constantly and noticeably only interested in his team's success, and it is always at the expense of the opposition. When his team plays poorly, or misses an assignment, or surrenders a goal, Remenda constructs an apologetic to explain how the impossible just occurred. Whenever his team is called for a penalty, Remenda takes issue, and wonders aloud about the referees competency.

There is a big difference between showing enthusiasm and being an insufferable homer. I don't think anyone has any problem with the former taking place in the game broadcasts, so long as it does not bleed into the latter.

nothing wrong with being a bit of a homer on a regional broadcast...just be respectful of the other team. Peter always was
