Freidman seems really awkward to me too. I like him and his balanced and reasonable approach, and he seems to be a keen insider without acting pretentious like many others, but some times I find that he comes off as weird when interviewing people.
But then again, I tend to like PJ Stock and he seems almost universally disliked by people here, so maybe my taste in broadcasters is the problem.
