2014 CGY 2nd, PIT 3rd, 2015 CGY 2nd, Baertschi, Backlund
for
ROR, Parenteau (dump), 2015 3rd
You have to pay to receive. The only players and rough offer I think Colorado would be enticed by. Is it an overpayment? ROR is a young, potential first line center who has one of the best two way games out there. And well, those don't grow on trees.

I'd be fine with this. It is a lot to give up though. My only thought is that Colorado may be looking for a dman rather than Backlund. Maybe it is Smid, Baertschi, and 3 seconds.

Only if the 'future considerations' turn out to be...Diamond Dean McAmmond.
(And now you know, the REST of the story.)

Can't imagine the Avs are going to want a bunch of okay assets for O'Reilly, likely much prefer quality over qunatity considering his age.
Hard to imagine another team doesn't easily beat that offer.

If we do that you know that if we trade for him to come back in the middle of next season, he can't play and has to sit the rest of the season out.

Backlund is the kind of center that makes teams better. Reliable in all situations and production is rising. Sven easily has the skill to be a top 6 forward and is very young, just needs his overall game to be refined for maybe another season. Those aren't just 'okay' assets. Do they equate the value you'd get from ROR? Maybe not quite. If you're looking at equal value it'd be Monahan+. But we can't offer them that.

I don't think we should be offering any high draft picks or prospects for a player like O'Reilly for the duration of this rebuild - These are the types of deals you make once you feel like you're on the cusp of being a contender, just like when LA acquired Richards and Carter.

Yeah because adding a 23 year old proven NHL budding star is a terrible way to manage assets...
You know, the kind of guys you build teams around and such...
I guarantee you Treliving has Roy/Sakic on speed dial working them for O'Reilly.
These are the kind of players a re-building team should target.

If you're gonna argue that about ROR then you could argue the same about going out to get a guy like Seguin. Dallas sure made a premature move there since they weren't then on the cusp of being a cup contender. Now they're stuck with an elite top line center for years to come.. Sucks to be them..

ROR is a good player but he's also playing with a very talented cast in Colorado and that won't be the case in Calgary where you would see his production nose dive. I personally believe he's not going to be an elite center but more of a good one and the Flames are likely going to be in the McDavid sweepstakes. Simply not worth it to unload what is likely going to be another top 5 pick. I would lose a lot of confidence in the new management if they would make such a shortsighted move as he's not even as dynamic a player as Seguin and the Flames passed him up for Monahan who probably will never put up quite the same offensive production.

We should totally not send an offer sheet. Colorado has filed for team-elected arbitration with O'Reilly.
Quote:
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie · Jun 15
COL has, in fact, elected club salary arbitration on Ryan O'Reilly. Had to be filed by 5 pm ET today. And it was.
|
This means that when the arbitrator comes back with a number, O'Reilly can choose to take that number for one or two years, his choice, and the team has to take it. If he takes the two-years, he'll be a UFA at the end of that, and the salary-arbitration process is supposed to be just murder on the relationship between a player and a team.
We've already sent the signal to O'Reilly that we want him in Calgary (at least, Feaster did) and he's indicated by signing that offer sheet that he'd be open to playing here.
Wait two years, then sign him as a UFA right when we're starting to trend upwards.

Bad defense, terrible coaching and injuries.
ROR doesn't also play as a defenseman nor does he coach. Neither is he a witch doctor able to heal anything.
Not to mention, he's a good player but there's a reason why you have a lineup of 20 players every game.

Offer sheets should only be used after the player has played at least one KHL game that season.

Short of giving up our 2014,2015 firsts and Monahan, I'd give up almost anything for ROR. I think he's the real deal and is only gonna get better.

There is no comparison between the two.
ROR is not in the same tier as Seguin - He isn't an elite top line center, and certainly not someone you unload a high draft pick for when you are rebuilding.
