The only thing I remember about Hamrlik's short Flames tenure is a ton of dumb penalties.

I would be absolutely thrilled if this resulted in the Oilers selling low on Yakupov.

Really? I remember Dion never being the same after Hamrlik was traded.

Think about that for a minute.

They'd be setting modern day +/- records.

Could you imagine that pairing on the powerplay? The Shorthanded Goals Against would be in the deep double digits.
And yet Phaneuf had a good +/- last season.

except in crunch time, when he folded like a cheap tent.

Pre-all star break he was +19. Post all star break he was an incredible -17 in 22 games. -15 in March when the Leafs fell apart. Dion is awesome!

Dion would hurt the Flames if he was on the Oilers just simply because the Flames gave up on him and he would be playing for his home team the team he cheered for as a kid.
I would hate a trade of Phaneuf to Edmonton.

It would be worth it just to see what Gaudreau would do to him several times a year.

Would you rather have Phaneuf or Butler?

I remember him playing pretty well with Jim Vandameer too.

phaneuf is severly overrated just as much as he is underrated.

the leafs are pulling at the wrong string if they feel moving him improves the team. Getting a guy like Boyle who brings tons of experience and pedigree would help navigate one of the youngest teams in the league in the right direction.

phaneuf was damn good for the first half of last year.

I remember after his rookie season there was a discussion about his potential. The sky was the limit back than. The comparable on the high side was Potvin, while the basement was McCabe. He really hasn't progressed and still lives off those first couple years. It is really amazing how he was able to cash in an elite dman contract when he isn't.

It's going to be completely hilarious when Dion is traded and BigTuna then suddenly realizes that Phaneuf was hot garbage down the stretch.

Yes but Hamerlik was not very good towards the end of the 2006 season as I don't recall a player so prone to dumb penalties or giveaways late in close games. There were multiple times he would dump the puck over the boards for delay of game penalties that cost the Flames leads. Also in the playoffs he and Phaneuf combined for a -15 in the seven game series but at least Phaneuf can claim he was skating on one leg. I thought he was a good regular season defenseman that you couldn't count on in big games or playoffs.

In fairness though, there might be about three defencemen in the NHL who could singlehandedly carry a partner with only one leg. Phaneuf's excuse is also Hamrlik's.

Phaneuf's play certainly didn't take off the way many predicted it would have. I remember someone saying before that he was a cross between Dennis Gauthier and Andy Delmore, which seems kind of appropriate now. He has a lot of tools, but poor hockey IQ. I do think that the hip injury is holding him back though and that the character issues are overblown.

And yet he played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, who, while not exactly awesome, are a far-cry from the Edmonton 'No Good' Oilers.

He was a +2 on a defence that would be considered 'stacked' compared to Edmonton.

I stand by my original point.

Does Phaneuf have a no trade clause? He would be better suited to a team with less external pressure - the media, fans etc.
