NHL teams have been told to expect the upper limit of the salary cap to be set around $70 million for next season — the final accounting is still being completed — and maintaining as much payroll flexibility as possible under that threshold is imperative.

That extra couple of million will help those teams in cap trouble.

Sweet. Now high spending teams will have even more room to sign stupid long-term deals!

A cap floor of around $53M unless my math is wrong.

Edit: Math was wrong, 51.7ish is correct.

Good God, do the Flames seriously have to spend $13.4M just to touch the floor?

I wonder if PA Parenteau would be a good option for taking on a bit of salary. Apparantly Colorado are shopping him right now.

31 years old, RW, 2 years left @ $4M per year. An upgrade on Lee Stempniak in my opinion.

So it is expected to climb about 5 million and change. So the Flames would need to spend about 13 million to get to the floor. That shouldn't be to difficult considering the amount of roster players they need to sign. Between Cammy or his replacement, decent depth dmen, and a backup goalie. I could see them getting pretty close to the floor with three signings.

Yeah it won't be hard to get there... of course that also means that most people will have to shelve their dreams of having whatever prospect they have a particular hardon for breaking camp with the team.

I think that puts the floor at about $51.7m

CapGeek @capgeek
Bonus overages will not be official until after NHL awards. Three estimates: #Bruins $3.7M+, #RedWings ~$3M and #NJDevils ~$3M.

So effectively the salary cap for next season:

Bruins: $66.3 mil
Red Wings & Devils: $67 mil

everyone else $70 mil

Looks like $12.6M (you probably calculated before the correction).

That is with 8 forwards (including Gaudreau), 5 D and 1 goalie (and SOB buried).

That would leave at least 5 forwards, 2 d and 1 goalie open and they'd need to average $1.6M to hit the floor. Should be doable without a strain even if you assume some rookies make the team.

It'd be very few rookies. We have 4 RFA's that spent significant time in the NHL last year (Byron, Colborne, Galiardi, and Bouma) and I figure all or almost all of them will be qualified and resigned for close to what they made last year (and you want to keep them cost controlled). After presumeably signing some guy to a big money short term deal I figure we'll have space for maybe 1 rookie to break camp next year (Probably Sven or Johnny would be my guess) unless we end up drafting Ekblad then it might be two.

They're gonna need to drop some large coin on a couple UFA forwards and a decent backup. At least it'll be some incentive for players to sign here.

Realistically, we're one top 6 forward or top 4 defenseman signing away from reaching and surpassing the cap floor.

I thought $3.7M was Iggys alone, What about Hamilton and Krugs carry forward bonuses.

13+ million on 2 players (one being a backup goaltender)? They're probably going to have to pick up 3 guys with decent price tags to get over the floor.

Unless we re-sign Colborne and Butler for double the money, they're gonna be busy in the offseason.

IMO, ideally one of Parenteau or Vrbata to play RW in the top 6 (4 mil). One of Gustavsson or Greiss to be a backup (3-4 mil?), and throw our bid in for guys like Niskanen, Stastny, Jokinen (Jussi), and Ott in the 4-6mil range and maybe one will bite.

Doubling the salary of Bouma, Colborne and Byron would not be out of line at all. They all made less than $650k last season. I think they all deserve a raise of almost double of what they received last season. I would give Bouma a 2 year deal and Colborne and Byron both one year deals.
