That is just so gross on so many levels. Highway robbery for the sens if this were ever to happen. I'm curious if even NHL2014 would allow such a trade.
Garbage.

The team that is way below the floor sheds 4 million in cap space to get Spezza....did Garrioch ask Lowe what he would trade off the Flames to get Spezza?

A writer's gotta write I guess? Still annoying when a 'credible' source runs with these types of rumours. Wait for his new column on hockeyb.....nope can't type it.
Stinks of 3rd party, after work beers, armchair GM negotiations.
Not saying we didn't make a pitch but the numbers don't add up for both sides.
Hockey Gods are watching out for us and this trade never happens.

It'd be awesome to get Spezza, but not at that cost. To have a legitimate number one, 70 point centre would be great.
I'd be okay with Hudler and a pick for Spezza.

No No NO.
If these are the types of moves we can expect from this GM then I'm terrified.
Hopefully it's nothing more than a fabricated rumor...

I think some people are forgetting how good Spezza is, he had a bad year this past season, but he was fighting injuries, and the Sens had trouble finding him proper linemates.
Spezza has averaged over a point per game in his career, and is one of only a few active players to maintain that feat. Last year was essentially his worst year since 03-04, and he still put up a decent enough 66 points.
Now I don't think it makes a whole lot of sense for the Flames to acquire him, but this prospective deal would be good for a team like St. Louis or Anaheim. In a few years I would have no problem if the Flames made a trade like this one for a player of a similar calibre.

The common assumption is that fans tend to overvalue their own players.
Yet, it looks like there is a pattern of undervaluing our players.
I'm not referring just to this trade but to many other proposals where we give away everything including the kitchen sink, for example to move 3 spots up in the draft, etc.
Is it because people don't want to look like homers?
Or is it because we see our players nonstop and see all their mistakes, while we mostly watch the highlights of players from other teams?

Or maybe it's because regardless of how happy fans are with how the team competed it was still the 4th worst team in the league and teams probably don't want to trade superstars for spare parts?

That trade proposal doesn't really make sense for either team.

This rumor pisses me off.
DON'T TRADE BACKLUND.
Sends a terrible message that as soon as our players blossom , they are outta here.
Let's see what we have in backlund first.
BLAH have to wash the taste out of my mouth from that garrioch crap.

If that is the rumored trade offer it would be a steal for the Flames as long as they got Spezza re-signed. Spezza is a major upgrade on Backlund and all you have to add to the deal is a bad contract and a 2nd or 3rd round pick. I agree with others saying I don't think the Sens would make the deal.
Of course I don't see this fitting with the Flames long term plans. Spezza could be gone after a year whereas Backlund has a few RFA years left.

Eklund has also broken a few trades himself - namely a couple with the Flyers. I would bet that they both have real contacts, but they both seem to just throw around 'rumors' that often make little to no sense.
As for Spezza - I will argue that he is one of the most offensively gifted centers in the league. Still doesn't make much sense for Calgary, however. I don't buy the rumor, but if true, at least it just further shows that Calgary is not 'tanking'.

Is Spezza a superstar? Iginla was a superstar.
Spezza is 31 year old star with injuries and declining production.
Nobody is going to hitch their wagon to him to carry them to the promised land. When Iginla was 32 people were talking about trading him. Spezza looks too old for what Flames need.
Since Spezza just had a bad year and wants out, one would think his stock would be at all time low.
Speeding up the rebuild will hurt Flames in the long run.
There has been a lot of talk from Conny about rebuilding the right way and not rushing anything. Kind of hope they stay true to that.

Why would we trade for a 31 year old UFA?
If this is true, I'm not happy.
Not only that, it would make it even more difficult for us to reach the cap floor.
This just doesn't make sense. It can't be true.

As someone who was rooting for Backlund and wanted him to stay badly amidst the trade rumors at the start of last season, trading him now after seeing the way he has re-established himself would be dejecting.

I would hope they only inquired if Spezza were to sign a long-term deal before coming to Calgary. Why bring in someone like him for year when it's highly unlikely we'll be in contention next year? But if he's willing to stay for 5-6 seasons, then it could be worth it imo.

Are we reading the same thread? 90 per cent of the fans commenting here are against the deal.
