Though you might have meant Flames contract space and in that case your comment is correct.

the Heat no longer exist. They are the Adirondack Flames

No. I'm sure they're the Heat until I remember they moved and that the Adirondack Flames are a team

IF O'Brien is kept and buried in Adirondack, he'll eat up about $1.1m in NHL cap space. May be worth keeping him.

if he gets a non-compliance buyout it would eat $666,667 this year and next year I believe, losing that extra 500k in cap hits may be worth it to get rid of him.

Buying out a two year contract with 10 million dollars left on it will cost nearly 7 million dollars. Unless it is a top 10 pick, I do not think that is a smart way to spend money. That buys a lot of plane tickets, gas ad hotel rooms that scouts could use in future drafts.

When can teams start putting buy out players on waivers? Is it in 48 hours or can they do it now?

I don't think we see any unless the Flames make a deal where an asset is coming back with a big contract they would like to get rid of. Based on their cap situation I don't think that is likely.

Can they pay sob to play in Alaska? That would be better IMO.
Keep the cap hit, keep his laziness away from the top grade kids.

Flames should inquire SOB if he would prefer a buyout or stay with the farm.
We don't need the buyout and class moves such as asking a veteran player his preference gets word around the league. A little PR never hurts.

Wideman can still be moved and if we retain 25-40% we could get a 2nd or 3rd from Detroit.

Can a team acquire a player just to buyout? Not that it would be financially prudent, but it would be a good way to "buy" assets. The catch being that the team would get a pick prospect for doing it.

I am not sure why suddenly people soured on Wideman. Before his injury, he was playing lots of minutes and was very reliable. Then he got injured and when he came back his play dropped a bit. Maybe he came back not a 100% healthy and play suffered. I still think he can go back next season the way he played pre-injuries.
As for buying out players, it doesn't make any sense that they will buy out someone when they will finally have a hard time reaching the salary cap ceiling at the beginning of the season. Like some other posters mentioned, the only one I think they will consider buying out is O'Brien so he can find another team to play for before the start of the season.

Ya, he's been fine. You always have to overpay to get free agents, but he is far from the waste that people make him out to be.

He's a below average skater and one dimensional. He's passable for the Flames right now but he isn't a top four defenceman on a playoff team, and without a dramatic improvement from his post injury play last year he won't be for the Flames next year either.

I don't see it (discussing the buyout of Wideman) as a knock on him and his ability but more of a discussion on how to rebuild.
Either keep him to allow younger players to develop and let him go after his contract. Or, buy him out and try to sign a FA that is younger that will be part of the longer term plan when we have a stronger team in 2 or 3 years.
You can hope for a trade between now and the end of his contract, but the NMC is a risk.

buying out Wideman solves nothing, it just creates new problems (reaching the cap floor is difficult as it is, and he's the only right-handed defenseman in the system that can play in the NHL). What a terrible, terrible idea.

If you see a random Sabres fan rioting around downtown, manically kicking things and screaming, it's because we don't buy out Ville Leino.

seriously who?
I don't think Wideman makes sense, he might bounce back and the Flames need some salary...

Name your figure. I'll take that bet he'll be on this squad.
