How about the commute, living in south Calgary and working downtown is fantastic. I know this firsthand, Memorial and Deerfoot are dream roads.
I haven't mentioned the vacancy rate or the commute because it's something I'm not familiar with (commute somewhat, go Ctrain) so I stayed away from it. That's something you might try as well. I have the option of living in Calgary or Edmonton then flying away for work. Calgary is the easiest pick, it wasn't even close.

Let's quickly touch on "The Edmontonian" again because I just want to make this clear. It's simply been proposed, saying "it isn't being built yet" just isn't true. We have no idea what will happen with that building. I left out Calgary's proposed buildings for a reason.

World Cup, airport being closed so taller buildings will definitely happen... Just stick to actual things. The beautiful river valley, it's one of the true beautiful parts of Edmonton, but you're fighting a losing battle bringing up much else.

I'm not the first to ever say this, not even in this thread.. but it's pretty telling that Calgary is the easy pick over Edmonton when the Edmontonians won't ever flat out say Edmonton is better, just try to drag Calgary down to their level. THe most they'll go is saying they're the same or not that much different. They know they're screwed claiming Edmonton is better.

I have no problem saying Vancouver is better then Calgary. I think Vancouver is great, it doesn't hurt my love of Calgary to say that, or make my stay in yyc less enjoyable. Love that Calgary is a city on the way up, changing quickly and throwing away all the old rules it once clinged to. One of the reasons I came here honestly.

Most anglers on the Bow do it for sport, we can afford to buy meat/fish in Calgary, and we choose to protect a known asset. You could safely drink the water that leaves the treatment plant (no thanks), it is entirely a non-factor. Even in a crap-hole like Edmonton you aren't releasing raw effluent into your waterways.

What an odd couple of things to argue.

First, McMahon Stadium seats closer to 40K, not 30, 47K with temporary seating. That makes it larger than all but 6 stadia in this year's world cup. But that's all a non-issue as Calgary will probably have a new stadium before the World Cup (if Canada gets the World Cup).

Second, this "Edmontonian" proposal is a private endeavour. WTF does your mayor have to do with it?

Third, traffic is what people in garbage small towns like to cling to when comparing themselves to bigger cities. Sure Edmonton's traffic flows better than Calgary's, but it's also better than Paris's, New York's, Munich's, Hong Kong's, Dubai's and pretty much any other world class city in the world. Tell me please, even you aren't dense enough to believe that Edmonton is "better" than those cities.

And yes, I love driving on Memorial every morning. It's actually quite beautiful, you should try it some time.

I find the Edmonton Sucks/Calgary Rules thing a little silly myself, but really, this World Cup business is just laughable. They are years from just bidding for this thing, and even if they do end up bidding...

Someone said counting your chickens before they hatch -- you don't even have a goddamn chicken to lay the egg. But apparently it's a "very good possibility". Sure it is.

Haha between the highest traffic accident per capita in Alberta, and the constant battle between avoiding potholes and zero-tolerance photo radar on the Heneday, commuting on Memorial would be akin to riding a pegasus through Nirvana.

Edmonton has a pretty awesome neighbourhood revitilization program that's light years ahead of anything Calgary has. So there's that as well. They have some really nice looking 50 year old neighbourhoods. They are also more innovative with LED street lighting, installing them years before Calgary started doing it. As MMF already said, the river valley is amazing. As the thread has also indicated, Edmonton is a world leader in waste management.

I'd also say that the new City Council appears to be very innovative and progressive, so I think we can expect some pretty cool things to come out of this city.

There are real reasons that already exist for Edmontonians to be proud of their city. No need to make things up.

-edit- just want clarify that I'm comparing Edmonton with Calgary because I know both cities very well, having spent more than a decade in each city. I think it's generally lame to try to prove how great one city is by trashing the other.

As someone who covers women's soccer, just a few small corrections: it's the U-20 Women's World Cup this summer and the Women's World Cup is in 2015.

Just a heads up to get more butts in the seats. Carry on.

Cyclops, I looked into this Women's World Cup thing for a moment. Apparently only two countries bid on this events, Canada and Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe later withdrew their bid.

Edmonton will be able host city along with another top city like Winning. Is this what you're hanging your hat on?

No offense to fans of women's soccer, but this doesn't seem like much of a major get. I'd imagine if Calgary was interested in hosting matches, they would have. Toronto isn't either.

Also, on a completely random and just a pure shot across the bow note. Former Kid in the Hall Bruce McCullough is making a TV show about his life in Calgary.

The series will be set in the 80's and he filmed in Edmonton.

Not trying to defend Edmonton but there is no arguing that Commonwealth is a better soccer venue than McMahon at the moment. And Toronto isn't hosting any games in the Women's World Cup because it's at the same time as the Pan-Am games which they are hosting. The lack of potential hosts speaks more to the current state of the women's game than anything but it's not a small event.

Looks like they changed the article this morning. From the bottom.

Damn!

Ah well, I guess they decided to do set decorations instead of going legit 80's. Probably more expensive this way, but safer.

What Edmonton has is little brother syndrome. You're always trying to live up to us. It is why, when major American newspapers describe Edmonton as being "180 miles north of Calgary", people upt there freak out.

The single greatest example of Edmonton's inferiority complex came when Krispy Kreme opened up in Calgary:

Quote:
Edmonton beats Calgary - again: We're better at lining up for doughnuts: [Final Edition]
Howell, David. Edmonton Journal [Edmonton, Alta] 30 Mar 2004: A1 FRONT.

EDMONTON - When Alberta's first Krispy Kreme doughnut shop opens in Calgary at 6 a.m. this morning, two Edmonton brothers will be the first customers in the door.

Jared and Brett Taylor have been at the front of the line since Sunday afternoon.

Actually, as of Monday afternoon, they were at the back, too.

"Right now the line consists of me and Brett," Jared, 25, a student at the Edmonton campus of the University of Lethbridge, said in a telephone interview.

Brett, 23, a student at Grant MacEwan College, said he found the absence of other people somewhat puzzling.

"It does surprise me about Calgarians," he said. "I thought there'd be a lot more of them. We were worried that we weren't going to be in the front of the line."

The brothers work in the United States each summer as sales representatives for a pest control company. It was in the U.S. that they got their first gooey tastes of Krispy Kreme doughnuts.

The business started as a storefront bakery in Winston-Salem, N.C., in 1937. A Canadian company will open 40 Krispy Kreme "Hot Doughnut Factory" stores in Canada over the next several years, including one in Edmonton this summer.

Jared's had his first, an original glazed, in Phoenix in 1999. He remembers it as if it were yesterday.

"As soon as I tasted it I was like, 'Wow, these are amazing.' And I've stayed loyal to them since."

Brett tried an original glazed two years later in Salt Lake City. Since then, just the sight of the chain's signature Hot Doughnuts Now neon sign makes his heart race, he said.

"There's no doughnut that compares, there's no doughnut that tastes like it. It melts in your mouth. It's just the best doughnut that you'll ever eat."

The Taylors have eaten Krispy Kremes in Atlanta, Phoenix and elsewhere. They will be in Las Vegas when Edmonton's first Krispy Kreme store opens this summer near Ikea in South Edmonton Common.

Missing the Edmonton opening is one of the reasons they headed to Calgary's Sunridge Mall.

Jared got dropped off there at noon Sunday. Brett drove down from Edmonton and arrived two hours later.

They slept outside Sunday night. A man gave them money so they can buy him doughnuts when the store opens. He also dropped by Monday with burgers and fries for lunch.

"People are taking care of us -- random people we don't know," Jared said. Employees at the store have let them in to use the restroom. They've been given doughnuts as well.

Fried dough is only a part of the Krispy Kreme experience.

Doughnuts are made behind glass in full view of customers. They "ride up and down a doughnut escalator" on a conveyor belt that takes them into a fryer and then underneath "a waterfall of glaze," the company says.

"It's amazing," Jared said. "They take them off the conveyor belt and you can eat them right off the line. There's nowhere else that you can have that type of a retail experience.

"And their employees, too -- it's the culture of Krispy Kreme, everyone's happy and excited. The employees are all upbeat."

Between the brothers, they'll buy six dozen original glazed doughnuts and two dozen assorted. Then they'll drive back to Edmonton to share the treats -- or most of them -- with friends.

"Once we get in the car we'll probably eat half a dozen," Jared said. "It's not hard."

dhowell@thejournal.canwest.com
Yes, that is the Edmonton Journal (Not the Sun, the Journal) bragging on page A1 about how two Edmontonians cut school to get the hell out of Edmonton and drive to Calgary just to be first in line for doughnuts. This is how desperate Edmonton typically is to "put one over" Calgary.

And my god is it ever hilarious.

Wow, I hadn't clicked on this thread in a while. It delivers.

It is also worth noting that our office vacancy rate has increased, but nowhere near where it was predicted to go once The Bow and EAP East got occupied. We are still under 10% if I am not mistaken, and there were predictions of being up in the 15-20% range.

As for the tallest being built outside of Toronto I can't hear you over the rebar and concrete currently being poured for Brookfield Place building one. Which will become the new tallest outside of Toronto when topped off, surpassing The Bow.

Red Mile, Calgary, 2004. The original.

Blue Mile, Edmonton. Cheap knockoff right down to the name. The Klondike days of 'miles'.

I truly believe any self confessed Oilers fans on this board, should be forced to use the flaming shopping cart as an avatar.

^In fairness, Red Mile 2006 was a fair bit closer to Edmonton's version than it was Red Mile 2004. I'm still convinced that someone would have died if Calgary and Edmonton had played each other that year.
