I did put a new battery in when I got home. If that doesn't get things working again it means that something is really messed up and I'll need AMA to break in and rescue my golf clubs.

None of this would be a problem if you had a truck.

How does a key physically stop working on a door? Are you sure you were at the right car?
j/k. Sort of.

Because there is an electronic component to car keys, so it probably didn't "physically" stop working.

ha! ha! i was in a parking lot today and exactly that happened. i pulled into a parking stall and a lady was trying to get into a silver mazda to the front/left of my truck with no luck. by the time i got out of my truck she was opening the door to the silver isuzu that was to the front/right of my truck. the look on her face was pretty much this - . i just gave her a big smile and went on my way.... no need to say a word!

Yeah get that for ignition [ie an immobilizer]. But the door keyhole?

Turns out that I have two problems. First problem is that my fob is dead. The battery is fine but the remote is not transmitting. The components on GM fobs are so crappy. This is the third fob that has died. Second problem is that the door lock cylinder has gone bad. It has a significant amount of play and as such when the key is being turned it is not actually able to lock or unlock the door.
I think it is time for a new vehicle.

Well that makes substantially more sense.
Not sure if it's the case, but a lot of GMs use this flimsy little plastic clip to hold the lock cylinder in place and it's prone to breakage. I found the cylinder of my old Jimmy in the bottom of the door. Cheap fix though.
Granted it won't help you at the moment, but that may be all it is.

My sight-impaired father in law once got in the passenger side of the wrong car. The guy inside was pretty surprised.

Considering it's a GM vehicle, and all their recent issues, you may want to check the ignition cylinder as well. I doubt the cylinder there is of much higher quality than the door locks.

My wife has a habit of doing this. For some reason though, she always "upgrades" whichever car she is trying to get into, and tries to get into a slightly nicer one.

I was filling up in Lake Louise a few weeks ago and in the first of two pumps. A guy in a little car pulled up behind me as I was finishing pumping and waited patiently for about 30 seconds before he got out of his car and started pacing back and forth glaring at me and glancing around. I proceeded to dump ice in my cooler as he got angrier and angrier. Eventually another pump beside me opened up so he backed up and went around to pull in. As soon as he did I backed my truck out of the pumps and drove off. He watched me go with such a sad look on his face.
I think it was at that moment that he realized he had boxed me into the pump and the guy in front of me was still filling up so I had nowhere to go.

The AMA guy mentioned that the problem might be with the clip so I'll have to check that this weekend.

My vehicle is on the list of ignition cylinder recalls but it will be a while before it can be fixed. The dealership said not to anticipate having the recall work done until the end of the summer due to the shortage of parts and the immense number of vehicles involved.

Keeping on with the driving GG because we all love them so much, people who just park wherever they want and throw the hazard lights on as if this absolves them from all parking restrictions or "no stopping" signs. This is particularly the case for people who drive their vehicle for work - the UPS guy, taxis, buses (not Calgary Transit). Some dude was stopped on 9th ave in the right lane downtown this morning, causing everyone using that lane on their way to work to go around him.

ha, when I read that I mentally crossed any GM vehicle off my list of possible new vehicles.......
It actually is a pretty sad statement when you stop and think about it.

Yeah, GM is a company that just never seems to learn from any of its mistakes.

I kind of feel sorry for Barra, it seems like she was dropped right in it, and forced to answer for decisions made before her involvement.

Meh, she's been working there for 30+ years. She might not be root of the problem, but Im sure she knew about most of the skeletons in that giant closet. GM knew about the ignition issue over a decade ago and kept silent.
