Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
Recap: no agreement to change draft lottery. Status quo for now but conversation continues. Tim Murray confident it means no change for 2015

Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
However, a league source said nothing is guaranteed at this point on timing of draft lottery change, if it even changes at all

I doubt that Edmonton does too much to address that deplorable blue line before next year. If anything they'll make sure that Nurse goes back to Juniors even if he is ready. Edmonton is all in on McDavid. I like the idea of a really harsh punishment like if you finish last three years in a row your team can't be shown on T.V. because its an embarrassment.

But then you end up with a situation where an otherwise really good team with a bit of bad injury luck one year ends up with a franchise player and you lessen the incentives to be good (playoff revenue). Players would probably like that though since it would mean more HRR.

hmm just changing the percentages?

Arash Madani @ArashMadani
David Poile says a proposal will be made to change percentages in the NHL draft lottery moving forward. No word on frozen envelopes though.
Hope not. More flat percentages won't help without creating less pick certainty.

Just change it to have more than one lottery

Maybe do a lottery for the top 3 picks?

That way the worse team can drop to as low as 4th overall.

Right now, you can tank all you want because even with all non playoff teams eligible for the top pick, you still have a 100% chance of picking top two.

Should be maximum three top 5 picks every five years and you cannot pick 1st overall multiple years in a row.

I dont think fiddling with the percentages will do much to dissuade teams. The worse teams will still inevitably have a better shot at picking higher (which I personally think is fine).

What they need to do is make sure teams who have picked 1st (or maybe Top 3) automatically ineligible for that position the following year. Some sort of one and done rule.

Damn shame. Sounds like they made the decision and then got sick of Lowe kicking, screaming and crying on the floor so they reversed the ruling to shut him up.

I think there was a great solution mentioned some time ago.

Once your officially eliminated from playoff contention, (so crappy teams are eliminated earlier obviously) then, you are ranked by the points you accumulate to the end of the season. This rewards teams that don't tank on purpose. There is something to continue to be competitive and play towards. For example Buffalo would have 25 games to accumulate points, on the other end a team like Pheonix was eliminated with only a couple games left in the season and would be ranked 14th because they could only accumulate 2-4 points. I don't see a flaw in this proposal unless teams take it to the extreme and start tanking so early that they have 50 games to accumulate these points. This way we will never have to hope our teams lose on purpose to get a better draft pick.

There should be a 'tax' on losing

This is good news for us. No Flames fan should be overly disappointed in this. Simply changing the percentages heavier in favour of the teams closer to the playoffs was a poor solution anyway.

I'd be okay with something like this. Suggesting every non playoff team should be given equal chance is a horrible idea though IMO.

Like my previous post, I think that if you have 3 top 5 picks in the last 5 years are about to get another one, you move to the 14th spot. It gives the team an incentive to at least play their best for the #6 and not move down to the 14th spot. This also could create a lot more strategy, maybe trading your top 5 pick so you don't move down as much if you've already had those top 5 picks for 3 years.

I'd like to see a tournament within the season to determine who has the best chance at winning the lottery.

Of all the teams to not make the playoffs, the team with the most points earned after they're mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, should have the best shot at 1st overall. Teams then just can't purposefully lose in order to get the best pick - they actually have to try to get there.

You maintain the integrity of the game because each team is playing for something - either playoff positioning, or draft positioning if the team really is that bad.

If a team is on the bubble of the playoffs and gets eliminated on the last day, they're competitive as is and don't "need" the higher draft pick.

If a team is truly bad and need the help, they'll be eliminated early and have more games to accumulate points, and would likely try hard to win more games.

It might make the trade deadline less exciting, as you'd get rid of buyers/sellers, and GMs will be all focused on improving their team as of now.

(Not my idea, but can't remember who said it)

You can't really know until it's tried.

I think it's a great idea personally.

The Oilers would still find a way to tank.

One of these years, a 90 point team, who just missed the playoffs is going to win the lotto and get a high profile #1 guy, and everyone is going to wonder why they ever allowed that to happen.

I can't believe there is never any discussion in these meetings about fixing the awful, game-ruining regular season point system with something that doesn't encourage everyone to play for a tie.

Of the bottom five teams at the end of the year, the team with the best winning percentage in the last 20 games gets 1st overall pick, 2nd best percentage gets 2nd pick, and so on. Would be good for the fans as well as they would still have something to cheer for.

Yep. Imagine if the Stars miss the playoffs by a point or two next season and draft McDavid.
