Didn't watch the vid, but is this groups problem with the name only or with the logo as well?Because it seems like Snyder could just change the name to reds and keep the logo, which could alleviate some of the public pressure on him.

He's only 49 years-old, so it could be a while if they wait for that to happen.

If the name changes (and I doubt it does) then using Reds for instance would be horrific. I imagine they'll go the Florida State route and partner up with one of the local tribes (Potomac is the one I see referenced the most) and get support to use the tribe name, and probably keep the logo.

I'd be more upset about the Cleveland Indians. Some white guy thinks he landed in India, and boom....your tagged with his mistake forever.

I'd be careful about calling a guinea a white guy.

There are a lot of Italians (gangsters) in Cleveland though, so maybe they could change the name of the Indians to the Wops. Or the Mafia. A little bit of research tells me that among the honkies in Cleveland, there are more people of German ancestry than anything else (and waaaaay more than Indians) so perhaps the Cleveland Krauts would be fitting. Or maybe the Gerries?

Some dense people around here. Yankees, Eskimos, Chiefs, Indians, are not derogatory terms for a population.

Even the example above of calling a team the Orientals isn't that bad. Vancouver Slanty-eyes is the closest you could get. Doesn't take much to realise how racist the name is. Redskins is no better.

Everyone in DC already calls them the 'Skins, they have a bunch of fans who dress up like pigs, and pigskin is a nickname for the sport they play. Inevitable PETA whining aside, it should be a pretty painless name change to the Pigskins. The Washington City Paper has been calling them that for the past few years since they decided to stop printing racial epithets in their newspaper.

These aboriginal sport names and mascots aren't somehow different just because they've been in existance for a long time. In my mind, it's a no brainer.
I would totally cheer for that team.

Do you seriously think Redskin is on the same plain for racism as Slanty-eye?

This whole thing is beyond stupid IMO.

As a white middle class 40 yr old, I don't think it is up to me to decide if they can or can't be offended.

The thing is that at some point, in the near future the name WILL be changed. And years later we will all look back and feel embarrassed that it didn't happen sooner (if we don't feel that way already). It is inevitable.

So just get on with it already and CHANGE THE DAMN NAME.
