Anti-Redskins add to run during game 3 of NBA finals
Quote:
Opponents of the Washington Redskins' name have once more made it clear: They're not going to stop and they plan to target more than just football fans with an ad scheduled to run during the NBA Finals.
The Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation will run a one-minute ad Tuesday night during Game 3 between the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat.
The ad, part of the Change the Mascot campaign, will air only in Washington, San Francisco, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York and Sacramento.
This video was apparently ran in Januray and will not be the same video they run in tonights game.

I don't even know what to think of all these matters, but I do see Native Americans all over downtown Calgary wearing "Braves", "Indians", "Redskins" hats and clothes.

Isn't that the same argument as "I hear black people saying 'n*****' to each other, so it must be ok!"?

i don't know, to me changing the name of a football team will not make me think of native american indians any differently - but what do i know, i am a middle aged, able bodied white male........
good commercial though

I know that the owner of the Redskins has stated he does not find the term racist and has no plans to change it.

I'll post the same thing I wrote in the other thread on this topic:
If the team was named the "Yellowskins" and had a Fu Manchu-esque Asain caricature for a logo, NOBODY would be defending it by appealing to history/tradition and saying how it's not really offensive. I don't see why a team named the "Redskins" with a Native American caricature for a logo is any different.

WASHINGTON—Denying widespread claims that the franchise is being offensive or disrespectful, the Washington Redskins’ kike owner announced Monday that he remains steadfast in his refusal to change the team’s derogatory name. “The Redskins represent 81 years of great history and tradition, and it’s a source of pride for our fans,” said the hook-nosed kike, stressing that the team’s insulting moniker is “absolutely not a racial slur by any means.” “‘Washington Redskins’ is much more than just a name. It stands for strength, courage, and respect—the very values that are so intrinsic to Native American culture.” The shifty-eyed hebe went on to assure fans that he will do “everything in his power” to preserve the team’s proud heritage.

Do people feel it would be acceptable to have a team called the "yellow skins" or "orientals" with a picture of an asian as a mascot? What about the "Dark skins" or "negros" and a picture of a black person? Of course those wouldn't be tolerated. These aboriginal sport names and mascots aren't somehow different just because they've been in existance for a long time. In my mind, it's a no brainer.
Wow, good to know that the millions of dollars spent on that campaign for renaming a friggin' FOOTBALL TEAM definitely couldn't have been used to help fix some of the decrepit living conditions of native people that they actually had the audacity to INCLUDE IN THE VIDEO.
Priorities in the right place, that's for sure.

While you may well be correct, one does wonder how this argument would work if the Washington Yellowskins were so named in the 1930s and called such for the past eight decades?
That said, it is time to change the name. It likely won't happen until Snyder kicks the bucket though.
I suppose it is time they change the name and get over it. But, there doesn't seem to be a lot of consensus one way or another whether it was a derogatory term. Some say Native American's started calling themselves it, some say it was based on the red tribal paint a tribe used. Seems to be some polls that say Native Americans are against it, and others say they don't care. Seems a case can be made that Braves, Indians, Tomahawk chops, etc have all had derogatory past uses as well. I bet it has been 200 years since anyone has called anyone a Redskin who wasn't a football player. If someone can show a national poll that proves the majority of Native american's find it offensive, then I agree they should change it. If it is just a small, but vocal group who wants to make a stink about something, then it is probably not a big deal.
I don't think any of this lobbying will make a difference. The NFL and Snyder are pretty firm on their stance here and the NFL's lawyers probably have all their bases covered.
Here's a pretty good article summarizing the origins of Redskin;
I'm of the opinion that you can personally take offense to most historical names if you choose to pick a timeline and context that suits your personal cause. I simply think there's more important things going on in the world to be overly invested in this topic.
