Also, conroy has already put it out there that next season will likely be worse for the flames. At the time that comment seemed related to the high chance that cammi goes elsewhere as an UFA, but management could definitely be looking into their crystal ball and think of a top 2 pick next year and allowing that to sway their plan for this draft.
Having worked in construction (for way too long), when I am called in to fix a Bob Villa project, I don't patch it, I tear it down and rebuild it from scratch. That being said ...

1. Conroys comment sounds like we are gonna free up some roster spots and give some rookies more NHL icetime. Sorry Strombad, but player development CAN happen at the show level. (I put that in caps just for you)
2. Preparing fans for short term pain for long term gain. Sorry Strombad, but this does not mean we want to tank. Its called a business reality. Play the rookies. Hartley can handle player development too. Conroy's comment seems to imply that player development and drafting are more important than the standings at this time. I agree. If they work hard in becoming better players, I don't care if they win. Its called a rebuild. If peeps cant see this is the best possible year to follow such a business plan then some of you are a bigger pillicks than I thought.
3. A 3rd rounder for Cammi sure looks better than nothing in return. If he walks for nothing, I'm gonna be pissed. Burke and his ego. Scares me sometimes. Cammi=nothing, not a good business decision.
4. About Gio. Do you sell your house when the market is at its highest or lowest? Just sayin. I still have a bad taste in my mouth over the Iggy/Bouw fiascos. Have we not learned anything?
5. Too much emotion, not enough business sense in here most of the time. Stajan, Wideman, Jones should ride off into the sunset. Oh the cap floor, moot point, dont even bring it up. It is an easy issue to rectify. We should try and make a deal for #1 or #2 and keep #4. Trading to get the top pic only happens once in a blue moon. Lets take advantage of it. Ekblad and one of the Sams, now that is a future to look forward to.

Bring on the hate.

We are rebuilding and our rookies should get a lot of playing time next year. However, we should be trying to win every single game, and having vets like Gio and Stajan will help make sure the effort is there every night--win or lose. I think if next season mirrors this season-- lots of close/exciting games, rookies getting playing time-- I'll be thrilled.

I agree that Gio probably won't have more value than he currently holds, but I think we need to keep him for his leadership abilities. Being as competitive as possible through this rebuild might stop us from picking 1st overall next year, but it does wonders for the development of guys like Monahan, Brodie etc..

I was wondering if the flames would be interested in moving Gio for the first overall to fla and pick up ekblad. It would fill floridas need for a roster player, and the flames would have a nice pairing moving forward forward with ekblad and Brodie.

I love Gio as much as the next guy but he's not getting any younger and his trade value is high.

Understand that even though he provides great leadership 3 years from now he may not be here and if he is he won't be nearly as good IMO.

I want Gio on the Flames until he retires. Look at how well he's turned out ever since he got the 'C' on his jersey. It was well deserved, and look at how we've done in the first year of the rebuild with him leading the way.

The Flames need a good captain while they rebuild, so no to trading Giordano.

You can't trade every good player from a team, further you can keep trading your captain. Yes, even rebuilding teams require high end skill, how else will the youngins' learn?

Gio for 5 years or McDavid for 15 years. You make the call.

There's no "call". There's no guarantee in draft position.

No hate here, but it seems the pillar of your argument is that hockey players and teams are houses. If you can take a step back and see that not everything is directly analogous with building and selling homes, you might begin to realize that your argument makes no sense.

Playing against other NHL's and a good coaching staff perhaps. This is the same thought process we used with Iggy. How did that work out for us?

Am I missing something? Do you have some fortune ball or something that none of us know about?

We know Giordano is good, but we don't know the draft position for next year.

Our management didn't want to accept that we needed to rebuild when Iggy was captain.

Yes. These are the only choices. Losing Gio=McDavid, and if we don't lose Gio we can't have McDavid (ie wont be the worst team next year. This is a bad thing as bad=good OR no good=good where no is between 0 and 1, 1 being the most no good).

Don't get hung up on symantics. Use the stock market if houses don't work for you. You sell high, buy low. I know what he brings to the team, I know his history and I love the guy too, BUT he may be worth more trading him. Its a tough call obviously but if it means McDavid, I personally make that change.

1. Conroy is managing expectations. No more no less.
2. Play the rookies that have earned it. That means we need real players and not all can come from the farm
3. Sometimes you got to be willing to prove you are not bluffing. Sucks but I get it.
4. Can't always sell your house at the highest market. Sometimes you still need it.
5. Numbering points is a great way to look pretentious.

Gio for Eckblad is over payment. Trading our captain risks destroying our much applauded culture. Trading Gio would have real bad optics and be felt in free agency efforts. There is a reason Calgary is preferred to Edmonton and it goes beyond location. We have a good reputation as an honorable organization.

The fortune ball tells me, if we trade Gio we be bottom dwellers next year.

But in the stock (or house) market, when you sell high, you win. You walk away fat and happy with your earnings, with which you can do whatever you please.

In sports, you walk away with multiple (generally worse and/or more raw) assets.

So its more like if you had to sell your high stock for a few smaller, more high risk stocks that may or may not replace the value of your high stock. Could be genius, could be ######ed. And of you're talking about trading one of the leagues top dmen for the purpose that it may net you a 25% chance to draft someone who may or MAY NOT be a decent NHL player, you're leaning towards ######ed.
