How are people determining what qualifies a teir 1, 2 or 3 city?
Seems mostly like this thread is just people's favourite cities in Canada.

If you think these rankings are based on anything but anecdotal opinion, you're going to have a bad time.

Kevin Lowe agrees that Alberta has two tiers of cities. Calgary is a tier one city, that supports and enhances the image of Alberta. Edmonton is a tier two city, that just resides in the province we care about.

Never worked for oil and gas in my life...don't really want to either. It's a big part of what makes this city run, but not everyone lives in that world or chooses to come to Calgary because of it.

I have a soft spot for Winnpieg. It really is a great city in the summer. Halifax is also a great place.

Oil and Gas is the main driver of everything in Alberta. The vast majority of people don't move to Calgary for the climate, proximity to the mountains, etc. They move there for the jobs. The jobs are there because of Oil and Gas.
If other drivers were even close to as important as jobs then Kelowna would have $3.5 million people.
If it weren't for Oil and Gas Edmonton and Calgary would be closer to Regina and Saskatoon then they are to Vancouver and Toronto.

I've been here for over 12 years (off and on), and no one can deny how massive investment in this province's oil and gas industry has transformed this city (and it's skyline and airport) into what it is today. 10 years ago no one was comparing Calgary to a top tier city in Canada. I love it here, but I'm here for work (and probably to stay), and like many of my colleagues and friends - who all agree this is an oil town (like it or not).
But maybe I'm biased....because I work in this industry....

It's funny how desperate Edmontonians are to lump themselves in with Calgary. You make a great baby brother.

Calgary is a big part of my life, but I'm not in oil and gas, nor do I plan to be either. There's other careers in this city that are just as rewarding as those in oil and gas.
It's the biggest driver of the economy, for sure, but Calgary, and Alberta, are more than just that.

Hey to be fair . Having the government here does not really help the Quality of life here I'm Victoria. Most of the Politicians don't live here. If they do their in Oak Bay . The wealthy district Municipality. We don't even see their tax money. A lot of the Good government jobs are in Vancouver. Just because We are the Capital doesn't mean we aren't displaced by The bigger Vancouver. In Victoria your best bet to get any money in Victorias either work as a low level government lacky or be a student. Anything else In between your not going to make much. You either come here to learn or retire (Usually in Oak bay or Sidney) What helps with us having a good quality of life here is not the government jobs they don't really help us as much as you think. Its the people who live here. Living on a island makes you appreciate people over industry. The register voters here make rational decisions without doller signs in their eyes that helps a lot. I lived in Kamloops for 10 years. Its the difference in They way each part of the country is split along political and Industrial lines. As well as rack City's priorities are. Bottem line is it is completely subjective to each person.
I would think Victoria Is a their higher than any Saskatchewan city. I'm not basing it on population mind you but on the landscape. Mountains right next to the ocean beats the praries. I have been throught Saskatchewan it is Very nice. Its not a personal attack on them but just my opinion.

With Calgary the Skyline is definitely more than Just gas and oil. You forgot to mention a good peice of Downtown are Bank affiliated or sponsored.Canadian Pacific also plays a big role.

You suck for forcing me to side with a greaser, but Oil Stain's interpretation is far more accurate than yours. Calgary (and Edmonton) are what they are because of O&G. The cities, and this province, grew primarily because of this industry, and many non O&G jobs followed the leader.
And like it or not, Calgary's position as the dominant business centre of the province/Prairies is a fluke of timing more than anything. The only reason Leduc No. 1 didn't turn Edmonton into the white collar hub of the region is the fact that most O&G companies had already set up in Calgary due to Turner Valley. If that first big strike had occurred farther north, the entire makeup of this province would have been radically different.
