Default Coyotes to name Darcy Regier AGM

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
One other bit of business: Coyotes closing in on a new assistant to Don Maloney. Belief is it will be Darcy Regier.

He's a better manager when he doesn't have a lot of money to spend

Pretty good hire as he made some mistakes but the nobody can argue that Regier is good at coming out on top in trades.

Maybe he doesn't, but it's not like it's solely up to him.

So far this off season Calgary, Vancouver, Washington, Pittsburgh and Carolina have all hired new GM's, and none of those organizations chose him. If he wants to be a GM still, I'd imagine he applied for all of those jobs, and if he did I guess the writing was on the wall for him to read.

I think Regier is one of the best at making trades (his problem is he is reluctant to make them). Love his ability to get first round picks in trades.

Is he reluctant, or is the issue just that it is very hard to make really good deals? The more you are willing to give up the faster you can make deals, but sticking to your guns and holding out for the most you can get will naturally slow down your deal flow.

Maybe because the other team is overvalueing their player(s) and he's hoping the other GM goes back to earth before he agrees on the trade. I think that was a smart move. Regier made some great/good moves in the past and he also made some bad move. Signing Ville Leino with ridiculous amount after playing one good playoff season was one of his bad moves. The guy is not perfect but I think he is a good GM.
I guess his old contract in Buffalo will expire soon(or already expired) that's why he is willing to sign as Asst GM.
