I think it's great that any city (even Edmonton) is doing this. It's innovative stuff and an interesting way to address waste issues.
That said, I honestly laughed out loud when I read the article this morning and saw "Mayor Don Iveson said this is a “sexy” topic for Edmontonians."
Holy f.
Garbage to washer fluid is apparently sexy in Edmonton. It's about as sexy as the broad acceptance of sweatpants amongst their unwashed masses....

This is really a cool innovated idea, which on the surface appears to be economical for the tax payers.
Born and raised in yyc, went to school in Edmonton, back in yyc now.
I remember going up to Edmonton and learning of the hate they had for Calgary - I always thought it was so funny because Calgaryians didn't give a rat @ss about what was going on up there, yet they cared so dam much about us via their hate. This thread has made me realize were pretty much all the same now.
Calgary is my home, and I will always prefer it to any city. It's hard for anything to be underrated, but Edmonton is.

Surprisingly to likely only you and about 16 other Calgarians, Edmonton is - in fact - OVERrated. They're the "capital" so they good some good faith from people who've never really been there or anywhere in Alberta, but Edmonton is the 5th or 6th best city in Alberta.
There are three types of people who like Edmonton:
1. People born there
2. People from much smaller/worse places
3. People whose rating systems end at "not that bad." (For example: "Canned chicken isn't actually that bad!" or "Yeah the dentist forgot the freezing before he did the root canal, but it wasn't actually that bad!")
Calgary is the Prime Cut, Edmonton is the deli meat. Sure, you can eat both, but Edmonton might give you Listeria.
Having lived in Edmonton, and visited many times, I offer this as the simple and undebatable truth, and I apologise for your confusion. Nobody blames Calgarians who go to Edmonton and say "Wow guys! Maybe we're wrong!" but like the ending of Shutter Island, sometimes there's only one real solution.

The prime cut of spam is still spam.
Bragging about which of two sub par cities is better is pretty ridiculous.

Yes, yes. Now finish your juice box and get back to class.
I wonder what kinds of emissions this plant will produce? I'm having trouble finding much detailed information on the process.

Edmonton:
Spam and juice boxes for everyone!
Where school runs even on Saturdays in June because the kids just don't seem to "get it"!
What a magical place.

You're trying a little too hard. I can appreciate your vitriol when you're on your game, but you're just not there on this one. Maybe try a different angle.

Kind of wish this was posted in the science thread or something. Although the Edmonton posts are funny, if it was mandated that this should be put into all major Canadian centres, and the biofuel redirected toward fueling public transportation, I think that I could probably get behind that idea.
Also, shouldn't Edmonton be used to try out most of these ideas, sort of like a guinea pig or field mouse in a laboratory? Experiment successful, lets move on to the real cities!

I hate to derail the thread as I enjoy Edmonton bashing just as much as the next guy, but in what possible way is Calgary considered a world class city by anyone other people that have lived there?

Okay, I'll bite. Calgary is currently not a top-class world class city with the likes of London, Paris, NY, Vienna, etc.. Admittedly I'd put Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto ahead of Calgary for what should be obvious reasons. Of the three largest Canadian cities, they each offer their own marketable "brand". Montreal is Canada's second largest city, hugely historic, one of NA's only european-ish cities, French, and known for its culture. Toronto is Canada's "big city" with all the undeserved stardom that comes with being the center of stuff. Vancouver is the west coast and is graced with an ocean on one side and mountains on the other with a great climate for Canadian standards.
Calgary in comparison to the big three doesn't have much going for it, with the exception of the following
1. Western heritage (best exemplified with the Stampede)
2. Heart of oil and gas business
3. Close proximity to the mountains (but not a mountain city)
4. Culture....?
If Calgary wants to go from a recognized city around the world to a top-tier city, it will need to focus on developing a world class brand, something that makes it unique from other cities. Some of the ways this could happen is by 1. Strengthening ties with the outdoors (focus on becoming a city with a theme for access to skiing, camping, outback quadding) and associated stuff. 2. Go the cosmopolitan city way and focus on bringing up shopping and events/cultural stuff in a bigger urban core.
Unfortunately Calgary is not graced with an instant world class quality, but if it identifies a direction and sticks to it, it can become one.
Edmonton on the other hand is just forever cast into the no goodness category of the world.

Don't know about world class, but Calgary is a step above Edmonton in most, if not all ways. There has always been a decent gap. Growing up North of Edmonton it was never an impressive site or place to visit, minus the mall. The first time I was in Calgary as a youngin, it was just better. Cleaner, the skyline (even then) and the view of the mountains almost anywhere in the city.
I'd say in the last 4-5 years, the gap has only grown and at this point Calgary is easily the better place.
Just drive into both cities and you'll quickly realize what I'm saying. Calgary has a wow factor with impressive buildings already there, and going up. Edmonton just feels like a lower quality of it, no "wow" there as you enter.. it's actually a lot of "oh... wow..yuck".
Honestly, what really excites me about Calgary is the changing aspect. It's not a world Class city, it might not ever be.. but it's attempting to do so. There has been a dynamic shift in the culture recently. It's no longer acceptable for architecture in this city to be boring, bland, and look Joseph Stalin designed it. YYC is finally comfortable saying we want things to be different and dynamic.

1. Since when has Calgary not embraced ourselves as city with a theme for access to skiing/camping/quading etc? We've pushed that theme to the max in attracting visitors for as long as I've lived here.
2. That's exactly what the city has been doing for the last few years. We're starting to see the results now. It's fine if you think we're not there yet, but your post seems to imply that you're bringing it up as something they aren't currently doing.
Agreed with the rest though.

Yeah, Calgary has always been strong in activity. Where we've lacked is culture. That's the shift that is being made.
