Wow complete misreading of the situation.

Burke is setting the public stage for King.

Nope, he's saying exactly what King and Edwards want him to say.

What I do not understand is why the City will not build an arena off the backs of middle class taxpayers for the benefit of billionaire owners. As Burke pointed out they cannot make enough money off this arena, they need a new one.

Couldn't agree more! At least Burkie speaks his mind and is brutally honest. All you get from Ken King is "blah, blah, blah (insert big word here)". Why does this have to be such a huge friggin secret?

Think that everybody in the organization has Ekblad at the top of their list, because of his size, potential, skillset, and team needs.

I think that they all have their own second choice forward that they want.

Burke – Ritchie
Treliving – Draisaitl
Conroy – Reinhart
Button – Bennett

This is just my personal opinion of who I think they would choose based on how I perceive their personalities and histories.

I doubt Burke would take Ritchie #2. He may be stubborn, but he's not an idiot.

Lobby group promises to ice any plans by the Flames to secure taxpayer dollars for new arena.

http://www.660news.com/2014/06/06/lo...for-new-arena/

I'm not an educated man so I'm a little confused by this statement " Calgary doesn’t have the same corporate welfare culture as Edmonton". Is this true??

So because Edmonton has more of a "welfare culture", it is more palatable for them to take tax payer dollars. Got it.

1. A new arena, and a new football stadium will get built in our fine city.
2. The Calgary Flames will receive some help.

Do people really believe in 15 years Flames fans and concert goers will be still going to the Saddledome & McMahon? Take a look around the continent, new facilities are going to be built in Calgary relatively soon.

They also tried to block the arena in Edmonton, we all see how well that went. The CTF is pretty much just a mouthpiece that nobody really even listens to anymore. Heck even the conservative party pays them little to no attention anymore.

You are confused probably because the statement is beyond stupid and if all they have is "Calgary doesn't have Edmonton's corporate welfare culture" to combat money going to an arena/stadium project the Flames may as well get the shovels out to break ground on the new taxpayer funded facility.

This is such a simplistic, narrow view to take. Not only do you not know anything about the structure of the deal, you're not considering ancillary benefits to the city with increasing development/tax base in the area, tourism, etc. Not to mention that this virtually guarantees the team will stay in Calgary for the foreseeable future (ie. 25+ years), the players all paying provincial income tax, the long-term benefit to local business and development of the city (again tax base)...think of all the condos that will go up around the new arena, every single unit paying property taxes long term, all the development and zoning fees the city takes...Plus for all we know the city could be getting repaid + a return.

Or, the world is black and white. It's easier that way.

Derek was nuts today on Twitter. Totally confrontational to our mayor and councillors and extremely unprofessional. Guy is a total loon.

If I'm not mistaken, the economic benefit has been proven to be a negative for new sports arenas

Oversimplification is the path to success, just ask Ezra Levant.
