Default If the Kings win, is Sutter a lock for the HOF?

To me, it's an obvious no-brainer. The guy is top 20 all-time in wins and would have two Stanley Cups. I'm just curious if there are any arguments against him.

Tough to say. Pat Burns has a cup, more wins and a better winning percentage and he's not yet in the HOF. I would think Burns would have to get in first.

In a ten year span he has been in the finals 3 times.. that is an impressive stat for any coach, especially one that wasn't even coaching the entire time!

In fact he has made the finals 3 times in his last 5 years as a coach. The man literally makes the cup finals every other year!

He also made the conference finals and won a division title in the other two seasons. He's only missed the playoffs once in the 12 seasons where coached the season in its entirety, and even in that season the Sharks went 40-27-8-3; he's consistent to say the least. It wouldn't shock me at all if he made the Hall of Fame with another cup.

How many coaches in the last 30 years (since the Oilers and Islanders) actually have two rings as a head coach? I think Bowman is the only one.

Sure he's top 20... but he's in the 20 spot and there are folk above him who aren't in (yet).

Darryl has an argument, but it seems hard to get into the HHOF as a coach these days unless you are uber-elite top of the top. So no, not close to being a lock. But he is also only 55. Another five years of coaching, and he could be closing in on 700 wins.

Sutter is a dinosaur and has lost touch with the new game and how to win in the modern era...................circa 2006 comment

Let's not forget selection to the HOF is not necessarily based on merit. Hopefully he is popular with the selectors.

Don't forget that Dowbiggin called him a disease as recently as 2012.

and the first 2 times:

1) he took the Flames to the cup winning 3 series against teams that had basically twice the talent (salary).

2) He won the cup with a team that wasn't going to make the playoffs when they brought him in with the Kings 15-14-3.

He might be the best coach ever. Definitely this decade... Only one close is Babcock and he has been pretty ordinary (compared to Sutter) without Lidstrom. Babcock has never taken an underdog team further than they were charted to go.

If only the Flames had a strong GM and had kept him as coach..... or if he had gone back coaching if the Devil's would have not let Brent out of his contract.

Kinda funny, I seem to remember the hiring was largely panned by the media. But being the clever people we are here, CP knew Lombardi made a great choice.

Dowbiggin in particular had some hilarious tweets. Something about "watch van and det and tell me why you'd hire Sutter" or something lol. Someone should dig those up.

Because Sutter didn't cuddle up to many in the press in the city. Many expect/demand that whoever the Flames coach is should be their buddy, because, well, they were the media and this was the Flames.

So, refusing to give them any insider info that they could spin one of twenty different ways in the articles, or twitter got them upset. They all wanted to be Flames "insiders" like their counterparts in other cities, and Sutter
wouldn't allow it.

Dowbiggen, in particular, along with another guy who like to hear his own voice more in Jock Wilson, seemed to take the most offense to the snub, and then they tried to play the "voice of reason" card (ie Sutter bashing) at every chance in order to stroke their egos more than provide anything of actual analysis.

No idea where Dowbiggen is...writing for the "Good Morning News"?

Sutter keeps on keeping on, and manages to get the most out of his players when it matters the most. Given his last 5 years of coaching, in this day and age, certainly another Cup should do it, given his background and career as a whole.

Things would've been much different in the late 2000's here if the owners let Sutter back behind the bench as he requested, after the Playfair experiment failed.
