Looking at this CBC feed, SWAT team is out front, there is a giant mess of people about a block away, and then every so often someone will ride right by on a bike.....talk about a leaky perimeter.
while I am unbelievably grateful for being Canadian I do feel like our justice system needs a complete review.
I don't believe this individual is "mentally challenged" by medication or naturally. If he was he would have been indiscriminately shooting people. This was a premeditated act against a specific target.
While I agree to a point with the sentiment that all life is precious, I also believe that if you willingly and knowingly take someone else's life you should expect to forfeit your own.

Fortunately in our current criminal justice system psychiatric experts need to evaluate the accused and their findings have to be presented and accepted in a court of law beyond any and all reasonable doubt.
An overhaul that would eliminate this because a cursory demonstration of an attack on a specific group of people would be a huge step in the wrong direction.
There are issues and problems with our criminal justice system (as in all systems across the world).
However, the beyond a reasonable doubt standard isn't one of them.

How can they not find the guy... Need to call in some serious reinforcements from a bigger metro department that can assist. They need some FLIR units.
I kinda think this is part of his plan, to not be found quickly, so his fellow wingnuts can talk about how the government has to lock down a city and how this is what the government intends on doing to everyone one DAY, and "wake up everyone, tyranical government" and blah, blah, blah.

How is this thread not busy? The boston marathon bomber thread was much bigger by this time.
Probably just because the marathon is such a massive event and when you kill 3 people and injure 264 others and there is so many videos and images non-stop on TV you'll have more to talk about. Plus the coverage was non-stop on so many channels in the U.S., now we just have CBC on it pretty much 24 hours a day with others covering to a lesser extent. All we have of this guy is a picture or two and now nobody knows where he is. There's just not as many different images being shown to us on TV constantly.
I don't believe this individual is "mentally challenged" by medication or naturally.
You can tell this from halfway accross the country with absolutely no evaluation (medical or psychiatric) and I presume no training yourself in either field?

So then if a hypothetical someone thought that Starbucks baristas were the vanguard of an invading extra-terrestial armada and went off and shot three of them you'd say this hypothetical person wasn't "mentally challanged"?
Seriously, you're in absolutely no position to comment on anyone's mental state. He's probably just some gun-nut hate-filled monster with an axe to grind and fully legally fit to stand trial but you're not anyone that can make that determination.
Sorry, I just hate seeing people make such presumptions about mental illness.

How the hell was he not in the building? If he was in there, and now he is not, is there any way to look at this as anything but a colossal failure by ert? I just don't even see how it's possible.
We are not the USofA, life still has value even if crimes are committed. I hope no one further is injured and this guy is arrested and goes through due process.

It's ridiculous that seemingly one can express an opinion or even speculate on whether or not this individual may have a mental illness without someone jumping down their throat for not being an expert.
There is nothing wrong with speculating or sharing opinions at this point, as no one really knows anything.

One report floating around is that the police were responding to a tip phoned in that the shooter was in the building. They were looking into whether it was the shooter himself calling it in as he blended in quite well after the original shootings. Witnesses have spoken to him after the shooting and he passed himself off as part of the police/search and didn't threaten them and even told them to go inside and be safe.
This is guy is terrifying because he doesn't appear to be acting as a "crazy" person. This is looking very calculated.
There is a press conference scheduled for 1:30pm MST for the RCMP to update on this incident.
I can't believe the guy is still at large. When I went to sleep last night I was sure I'd wake up to the news of his capture or even his death. Especially considering they've had several sightings of him since, its crazy that he's managed to evade authorities so long.

I'd speculate the trouble is they can't approach him even if they do see him. He seems to have planned this and is targeting police, so any attempt to approach is obviously highly dangerous and could result in police officers being led into a trap. Because they can't approach him they keep losing him as he moves (and he's probably moving strategically).
At this juncture he's most likely going to end up bunkered down somewhere, as that's his only real option and it's the only type of scenario the police can exercise some control over.
