There are about 15-20 really good defensemen that are rated in the 25-70 range that would definitely be worth picking (half or more are better prospects than Wotherspoon and Sieloff for quality comparisons)

I think they've shown they're willing to rebuild now though. How many years of high picks are required? This is two. Is a third year a must?

I think at this point they've been very explicit that they won't mortgage the future and that they think the team is built in the draft. With that attitude I'm more than happy for them to talk about making the playoffs regardless of how I feel they will do, I have no concerns that they're going to ship a promising player out for a rental.

I get that.

With Burke and Treliving at the helm though, I don't think we have as much to worry about as in previous years.

It's not about just high picks, it's about developing them too. There's no trade out there that puts this team in the playoffs without some huge sacrifice to the future of this team.

I hope you guys are right though...most of the messaging has been on-track, but I'm still a little paranoid the good vibes will be crushed in some Flamesian manner.

"We are not moving young assets, whether they are picks or players, for short-term relief," Treliving said. "We are going to make sure we are thinking long term."
Unless Treliving was lying through his teeth, you have nothing to be paranoid about.

I think Burke just has to say that. Likeliness of the Flames making the playoffs... not that high.
I think it is to kinda reinforce... to not rebuild like the oilers.

Sorry. Yeah, I'd be worried if they mortgaged the future too. I think Burke though meant that they weren't far off and with a couple pieces and some development the playoffs are a realistic goal

It's just kind of an anti-Oiler formality now. Postseason presser Burke also called the season a failure - before immediately launching into how awesome it was.

for me, it's all about getting enough critical mass in the prospect cupboard, that you are able to leverage some of those assets to bring in pieces of the puzzle (top 4 dmen, top 6 proven forwards, starting goalie, etc) through the means of trading.

Maybe as early as after this draft, but more likely, after next draft, the flames management will likely be in the position to start using those assets to start the next milestone on the critical path of the rebuild.

The oilers/jackets/islanders seem to be of the mold of teams that were never able to achieve the second milestone, yet teams like the senators, leafs, may be guilty of mis-assessing the stage of the rebuild they were in when they tried to use their young asset chips to kick start the next phase (trading for players).

LA and the hawks seem to have been spot on in this regard.

Nothing to be worried about. Burke said you don't change the dynamic if your team via free agency. He and Treliving have also said no moves will be made without the long term vision.

Perhaps he is confident in making some classic Burke fleece deals this summer adding talent from cap strapped teams for very little?

So much has to go right for the Flames to make it but a couple of game breakers sure would help

I was reading some of Burke's quotes and thinking I should go get popcorn because some of them were going to send people over the edge. Thankfully sanity seems to have prevailed and no one has got too excited yet

I don't think you will ever hear Brian Burke openly admit that failure is an option even if he realistically knows it's not likely to happen. The Flames could have had the Sabres record last season and he would still say playoffs are a goal the next season as you never want that loser mentality to set into the organization.

There's still so much time.

I wouldn't mind drafting Ritchie at all. Except, please trade down if you are going to do that, and maybe manage to get a 2nd/3rd round pick for 2015 as part of the trade. I wouldn't be surprised to see Toronto calling us if Bennett is still there at #4, and it they really overpay then I would pull the trigger.

I still want us to draft Ekblad/Reinhart/Bennett/Draisaitl, but I am glad we are least willing to keep our options out there. Interesting that we want the 1st OA, I really think Treliving wants Ekblad.

If Bennett is available at 4 and they trade down to grab Ritchie I'll throw my TV out the window.

Would be okay with Ritchie at 5th or 6th, but at 4th there are better options.

I'm just imagining the CP explosion had this been Jay Feaster making comments like planning a parade, drafting Ritchie, etc... It would be off the charts with all the why does this guy talk so much and he really needs to shut up and focus on being a GM and not a bumbling smooth talker who's rushing a rebuild and wasting a 4th overall pick.
