Genie needs to get some gamesmanship going and go to the ump and demand a time violation.

Saving that game from 15-40 should be a big boost. Hopefully she can carry it through to a break here.

Sigh....another missed open shot. So many blown chances today, very tough to watch.

Genie struggling with those lofts shots that she should take advantage of.

Oh man, Genie is going to have nightmares tonight thinking about all the missed shots and opportunities. Feel bad for her, but this is a huge learning experience. She knows she can hang with the top dogs, she just needs to get tougher mentally in matches like this.

Did Genie totally whiff on that last shot? Ouch.

Good for you Sharapova, your opponent fell apart. You're the best.

I'll say it again but I just hope we don't hear anything about what a "fighter" Sharapova is. Maybe she is, but she didn't win today because she fought hard, she won because Genie butchered two 40-0 games and missed many easy shots in the 3rd set. Very tough to watch for Genie, just couldn't hold it together in the key moments.

Lol at Sharapova saying she played poorly and Genie played "exceptional". No, Maria, if Genie played "exceptional" you would have lost 6-2 6-0. Genie played poorly too Maria, just accept you escaped here.

I wish these announcers would just call it like it was. Maria didn't have her best game, but she finds a way, she's so tough in 3 set games, blah, blah.......

Couldn't they just say that Genie should have won but fell apart as the game went on? Would have been a more accurate account of the match.

I haven't watched it yet but I must admit I'm becoming a real fan of Genie. Admire the way she plays and I'm chocking this up to just another bump on the way up to eventual success.

so this is what, Genie's 5th experience in a slam main draw? there is absolutely no disappointment to be had here. she's rocketing up the charts a lot quicker than her peers. if she's truly as intense and competitive as they say she is, today's match will be a huge log on that fire. I think this thread will be party central on CP much sooner rather than later.

The value in experience is not necessarily in the ability to rise up to the occasion, but in the ability to remain a little more consistent as the game wears on. It is perfectly fair to argue that Sharapova did not have her best game, and it is perfectly fair to say she still found a way. She was able to control her game better than Genie was and made fewer mistakes than Genie as the match wore on. That was the difference.

Genie will learn from this experience, and will become a little more consistent next time out. And that could well prove the difference when next they meet.

Resolute is right. Sharapova, while not playing well, could sense that Genie was flaking out. So Maria held back and let Genie miss. Not everyone can do this. Some just continually ball-bash regardless of how the opponent is playing,.

I was kinda referring to having to listen to her matches on mute, because if you leave the sound on you might get mistaken for watching porn.

Anyway I like Halep to win pretty easily on Saturday. Sharapova has not been sharp 3 matches in a row and Halep is absolutely rolling.

Perhaps for parts of the game, but how many wide open courts did Genie miss by going wide or slamming it into the net? Lots. That's not some sort of strategy of Sharapova's, that's just Genie falling apart as the match went on.

She's still young, she has a great future, so hopefully this is just a learning experience......still an awesome result. She'll win a slam sooner or later.

I just wish announcers would be a little more honest when recapping a match. They didn't have to slam Genie, but instead of saying what Maria did, perhaps spend a couple seconds mentioning that Genie was the better player for a large part of the match but some missed opportunities led to Sharapova winning.

There's mistaken for porn and then there's Monica Seles's grunt/squeal which was way worse.
