There is no chance a guy who has killed 3 RCMP officers if going to go quietly. He won't be captured alive, regardless of what people may or may want or what proper justice says.

While I agree, the practical situation necessitates caution. Taking the guy down in a hail of bullets in a residential area has far too high a chance of a bullet going through a house and injuring/killing a bystander.
I suspect that this is how it will end anyway, but at this moment, the cops appear to have the time to allow this to fall into a more favourable situation, even if that end should come to pass.

This guy needs to be captured alive, if he's killed he'll be hailed as a hero or martyr by his sympathisers, if he's caught they can prove he's a nut job.

And just as I suspected, he expresses his issues to others - having a hate on for authority and worried about "World War 3"
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/...ticle18999247/
A former co-worker, Caitlin Isaac, said Mr. Bourque often talked about wanting to “go out with a bang and take people with him.”
Ms. Isaac, who worked with Mr. Bourque at a Wal-Mart three years ago, told the Saint John Telegraph-Journal that “this is something he wanted people to talk about but I never thought he’d actually go through with it.”
She said that Mr. Bourque had a problem accepting authority and that his two long guns were “his favourite things.”
“He seemed to have a hate on for everything.”

Pretty delicate balance of doing everything necessary to stop him from killing any more people to making sure you don't act like LA and Boston police shooting up every similar looking vehicle.

Unless he is armed and going to use lethal force, you can't use lethal force on him. If he's just running away unarmed you can't just fire on the guy.
Now, should the cops come across him and they did kill him, I'm sure they'd find a justification for it (and rightly so). "He came right at me!"

While I'm sure every effort will be made to apprehend him, the police obviously take into account how dangerous the individual is in terms of how they will proceed with a plan to apprehend him.
It might just mean waiting him out if they can get him surrounded.

I'm sure all their movements are very calculated at this point, as the guy is probably hiding out somewhere in the bush.

He shot and killed 3 RCMP officer's already. Unless he throws down his guns and walks up with his hands in the air. They already have just cause to use reasonable force.
I'd prefer to see him arrested and tried. I wouldn't be surprised if he was found to be mentally incompetent. If that's the case, the rest of his life in a mental facility is a sentence worse than death.

I say burn him out of the bush.
At least then you don't have to send officers in after him, which is probably what he wants at this point.
Edit: Or not, because of dissentowners update.

They believe they have located him in an apartment complex and that he has his cousin with him. They have set up a perimeter.

The police scanner is reporting they know his location as being in a rooming house on Mountain Road (a few KM from the shooting site), and he's with his cousin.
Perimeter is set up and ERT are on scene.
Talk this with a grain of salt, as there have been numerous calls in the last 5 hours, but this one seems, so far at least, to be the most convincing.

I've discussed cop-haters with family (lots of RCMP on my wife's side), and they're usually aware of them, but unless they actually break the law there's not much you can do. You can write creepy Facebook statuses all day, but until you actually cross the line the police can't do much more than wait. It'd be great to have recognized the problems and gotten this guy some mental help if it was needed, but how would you go about doing that if he didn't want it?

I don;t think its movies or video games or heavy metal music, it is the glorification of these guys after the fact. Before this no one gave a crap whether this tit lived or died, now everyone knows his name. To him and his ilk, he has already won.
|
To be fair, I don't remember the majority of names of people who committed atrocities such as this, mostly because it withers away in my memory with time - usually because I'm not thinking about them.
Do people actually remember the names of every shooter like this?

Oh my God yes please. This should be standard operating procedure. Instantly lock FB account and withold his name from the media. It's pointless for the public to have anyways. All it does is glorify the nutjob in questions and gives him exaclty what he wants. Please take that away.

Timothy McVeigh comes to mind. That name is infamous.
EDIT: Albeit on a much larger scale, and it was a mass bombing rather than shooting, but still.
