Conan did a funny edit on the "A First Drive" video. Here's the original:

What does it do if its mapping data is wrong or it otherwise encounters a difference in what it sees vs. what it expects? Washed out road, new intersection, removed intersection, etc.

Once the system is in place I would guess that the cars all provide feedback to Google as you drive, so a washout would be live reported to Google as it happens and by the time it is an issue your car will be fully aware of it.

Something interesting to consider is that this may be the point where the software becomes more expensive than the hardware when buying a car. Software upgrades will also become frequent where you will have to update your car to the latest OS.

Stuff like that scares me when you think about Windows and the blue screen of death.

This can't come soon enought for me. I would trust software produced by a megacorp who would have to make a huge payout if they screwed up vs. the drunks, barely conscious seniors and checked out, drugged up or just stupid drivers I share the road with now as soon as I can make the shift.

Also I can use the time to actually do stuff on my commute.

Currently at least in the states MVAs are the leading cause of death for people 5-34, so the cars would have to be almost a total disaster not to save lives.

As someone who doesn't like driving... This would change my whole life... I would never be home!
