Panthers lay off 30 people
Andy Slater @AndySlater
Source: Florida Panthers let go many employees today, possibly 30.
Andy Slater @AndySlater
Staff let go from Florida Panthers include almost entire sales team and many building ops personnel, among others - source says.

Wow that's pretty crazy - any idea if there some sort of relocation smoke in the air (letting go your whole sales staff and building ops raises the thought anyway) or is this just a shakeup within their organization?

Ownership had just changed last fall correct?
Likely just the new owner shaking up something that he thinks wasn't workign.

If they are "layed off", doesn't that mean that their job was pretty much cut? Can you lay people off and then hire immediate replacements?
If they were fired for just being inadequate, then that is different though.

They can hire them back in September. Just use interns to get through the summer.

I imagine the sales team was fired as laying off the sales team in the offseason wouldn't exactly be a great way to move season tickets as that's not a market where the tickets sell themselves. Probably ownership not happy with the way season ticket sales were being handled and decided to clean house and go in another direction.

must be crappy sales people if they are being let go, a good productive sales person is usually the last to go

Their sales were terrible...this was the same team that gave tickets to non-winning lottery tickets, right?
My parents went to a game last season during a trip to Florida...it was fairly late season (Luongo in net) and against a fairly irrelevant team (Senators), but this was the view from their seats:

Holding signs simply with the words "Quebec Nordiques" wouldn't hurt either way.

I think layed off and fired have the same meaning as people lost their jobs.

If they're willing to sell season tickets to people in different countries, then what do you think their policies are on shipping jobs out, too?

George Richards @GeorgeRichards
Have been told by someone close to the situation that #FlaPanthers did group layoffs in a conference room; they were told it was to save $$
George Richards @GeorgeRichards
#FlaPanthers don't have much of a sales staff left I've been told. About half a dozen, mostly entry level.

The Panthers laid off approximately 30 employees today with most of the damage coming within the team's sales department.
I was told at least one Vice President was fired as well as a long-time employee within the team's public relations staff. Other positions from throughout the organization were closed. I've been told many won't be replaced, at least not anytime soon.
According to someone who spoke with me this afternoon, the team called a meeting in a conference room at the arena and told those employees there they were being let go.
The message: The team is losing money and needs to save some.
