If Sportsnet had a bunch of young PBP stars in development, that'd be one thing, but this is more like Gordie Howe signing with the Oilers and pushing some Forgettable McCrapperson out of a roster spot.

That's because he is 80 years old doesn't mean he can't do PBP anymore? On the game that I saw a few nights ago Kings-Hawks double OT, he doesn't sound like he is 80. That was an amazing PBP call and even his colour guy and the rest of the panel was so appreciative. Even if he works for one season would be good enough than listening to other Sportsnet PBP guy. Who else is available? Cuthbert, Hughson and others are not available due to their contract.
OR we can watch Jim Hughson observe five remarkable plays without so much as raising his voice, talk about the play of 'Frankie Boullion' and then lose his #### when Tokarski gets shot in the chest.
In his heyday I'd certainly take Cole. But for the past few years, I'd easily go Hughson over Cole. It's impressive Cole is still talented enough to call a game well 80, but I'm glad CBC gave Hughson the #1 PBP job 2-3 years back. I know he can be somewhat annoying when he does Canucks playoff games, but that's not going to be an issue for quite a few years now it seems, and Cole was no different with Leafs games back in the day.
I like Cole and certainly recognize him as a legend (sometimes I forget how good he used to be when I see clips from games 20 years ago), but I don't think I have the same nostalgia with him that most do. I feel the same way about Cuthbert that most do about Cole, Chris' voice just reminds me of watching tense Flames playoff games as a kid growing up. Cole usually just did the East series.
Really hoping they take a look at Cuthbert for next year. Or is he doomed to only doing Jets & Habs regional, regular season only games for TSN going forward now?
All respect to Cole and his accomplishments. Truly a legend.
But... 80? How much longer does he need to do this job for? This is like those doctors and lawyers who hang on into their final years pulling down good pay but contributing little more than being a barrier that keeps hungry young talent from entering the market.
I agree a guy like Cole has earned the right to go out how he wants, but you'd think by 80 he'd be thinking about the profession generally and those up-and-comers who are what he once was.
I don't think he's sticking around because of a cheque. He's doing it because he loves it.

for my money no better play by play hockey guy has ever existed. Amazing voice and talent. His call if the salt Lake gold medal will always be fresh in my mind when i think if the game

I'm sure. My point remains the same.

Yeah, because Sportsnet had sooooo many up and comers like Charlie Simmer and Kevin Quinn just chipping at the block waiting for their big chance to be the voice of hockey
All this talk of Bob Cole being done is overrated. Even at his age, he is still the best voice in the business. He could be commentating on paint drying in his house and it would still be intense. Sure he gets a couple plays wrong every once in a while, but if you listen to other commentators they make the same number of mistakes each game.

Wow, what an idiotic comment on so many levels.
So in your world old people shouldn't do what they love because someone younger is capable of doing it? Do you shove old people out of the way on the sidewalk, because you consider your time/life more important?
Also, like mentioned earlier, Canada doesn't appear to have a ton of great young PBP talent ready to take his spot anyway.
He is much better in the playoffs then in the regular season. In a series the thr storyline builds, the players stay the same so Coles shortcomings due to age don't show up.
I just think he doesn't have the capability any more to absorb all of the prep they have to do to cover a new team every week. But give him a playoff series and he shines. That double OT game was fantastic.
.
I would like to see a study on the correlation between hating on commentators and NHL video game consumption.
I have a hypothesis that the more you play NHL 2012/13/14/10/etc on Xbox, the more likely you are to pout when hearing a play by play voice that differs from that in your game

I like Bob Cole overall, but I think he should be listening to what Peter Maher said and retire before you're out of your element.
However, he's still probably an upgrade over many of the other alternatives so I have mixed feelings. It's one thing to mix up names here and there, but there are several times during games now where Cole simply fails to recognize a big scoring opportunity entirely.
Though there are a lot of these moments nowadays too which are hard to listen to:
Alf Silfversen.

And why would anyone waste their time trying to become a play-by-play announcer? Most of the top jobs in the industry are taken by men who should've retired years ago or are gifted out to former players/coaches only for name recognition. There has been and likely still is magnificent play-by-play talent that has either languished at the junior level for decades or just given up because there is never any room for advancement.

If Alf silverson is the price we pay to get his work in the post season, take it and run.

The three of them Cole, Galley and Millen are a good combination.
Hughson, Simpson and Healy spend too much time talking over each other (especially Healy) and can't bring the atmosphere into your living room.
