Flames Flames offer Eric Roy a contract and choose not to sign Coda Gordon

Calgary Flames @NHLFlames
The #Flames have extended a Bona Fide Offer to Eric Roy (@Royzy07). The defenceman was drafted in the 5th round of the 2013 #NHLDraft.

Calgary Flames @NHLFlames
The #Flames has chosen not to extend forward Coda Gordon a contract, therefore he will re-enter the #NHLDraft.

Surprised Coda Gordon fell off the map so much, I had heard a lot of rave reviews after the draft from various people "in the know" so to speak.

signing your first 5 selections within the first 12 months after the draft has to be some kind of record or something.

How has Eric Roy's progression been? I know he was originally projected to go in round 1, but he slipped all the way to round 5. I thought he might end up being a steal for us down the road.

I guess Burke wasn't joking when he said Calgary had the best draft last year. Enjoying the prospect pantry at the moment

if Roy signs, he'll probably go to Adirondack in the fall. He's already AHL eligible next season because he turns 20 before December 31.

Here's an article I wrote earlier this month on Eric Roy. He's a really good person. Has a good head on his shoulders and seems extremely driven to improve his game to get to the NHL. The article talks a bit about his beginnings and how he's a bit of a role model to his hometown:

Coda Gordon's main knock has always been his skating-and by the looks of it, it hasn't improved much.......

Now they just have to hope Harrison can succeed in College hockey and get Rafikov to come over to the CHL. And I'm not sold on Gilmour yet.

Good to get Roy signed though. It's never a bad day when you can sign your 5th round pick who was projected as a late first.

Odd to see Roy signed so early. He's a mess in his own end.

Harrison looked so good in last years prospects camp, I was really disappointed how this year turned out for him in college....

Odd that the team's (a) offering him a deal now and (b) announcing it.

And he hasn't developed the offense to come close to justifying it.

Can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not. 51 points this season should tell you he's just fine offensively.

Unless the kid has turned a corner and backed it up in two weeks in Abbotsford. Signing him this early gives him tremendous motivation over the summer. Some kids need a threat to create the motivation; others need support - the team saying "we believe you can get there and are prepared to put our pen to paper on it.

He is the latter. I'm glad for him.

He's not signed yet. This is simply a condition of the CBA to retain draft rights to a player from major junior (it's been in the CBA since at least 2005, but I don't recall teams ever announcing it).

Quote:
8.6 Reserve List-Exclusive Rights.

(a) Commencing with the 2013 Entry Draft, a Player selected by a Club in the Entry Draft shall be registered on the Reserve List of the selecting Club as an "Unsigned Draft Choice."
(i) Subject to the provisions of Sections (b), (c), (d) and (e) below, such registration shall establish for such selecting Club the exclusive right of negotiation for the services of each Player selected and registered as against all other Clubs up to and including June 1 of the next calendar year following the date of his selection.

(ii) Subject to the provisions of subsection (iii) below and Sections (b), (c) and (d) below, if, on or before June 1 of the calendar year next succeeding the Entry Draft, the claiming Club makes a Bona Fide Offer (as defined below) to its claimed Player of an SPC, the Club shall retain the exclusive right of negotiation for the services of such Player up to and including the second June 1 following the date of his selection.
If they had not made a bona fide offer, he would have been removed from the Flames' reserve list.

Roy was the only player drafted last year who they were required to give a bona fide offer. Monahan, Poirier, Klimchuk, and Kanzig are already signed. Harrison and Gilmour are College students, and Rafikov is a European player so the three of them didn't require a bona fide offer to remain Flames property.

The offer is likely a bare minimum ELC, so he might not want to sign it. If he doesn't sign it, he'll still remain Flames property until June 1, 2015.

44 points actually, in 66 games-as a 19 year old. True, he is "just fine" offensively, but those aren't exactly superstar-type numbers. My point is that his play in his own end doesn't look better given those numbers. Odd that he would be rewarded with a contract so early.

Isn't he a defenseman? So 51 points this season for a defenseman sounds like a good season to me especially for a 5th rounder. I wouldn't even complain with that much points for any D.
