Banner Saga is on my to play list.
As far as PC games X Com is the best of them IMO, if you have access to some nintendo consoles or old PS you could go FF Tactics or Advance Wars.

While it's super old now, Warhammer 40k Chaos Gate was awesome at the time. It also had killer music. I know the new 40k game, Space Hulk, was very poorly received when it first came out but I've heard they've since fixed all the issues.

Not really a fan of the genre, but I liked Fire Emblem Awakening.
I've also heard good things about Valkyria Chronicles and obviously Final Fantasy Tactics.
Valkyria Chronicles is half RTS, half TBS.
As an aside, FE:A Is probably the least tactical FE game since there are about a hundred ways to break the game. Probably worth a buy as it's got the emotional, albeit really predictable, edge which pulls more than other Fire Emblems but just note that it's more TRPG than pure and raw TBS.

I'd recommend Panzer General II if you haven't played it before. It's one of the best WWII TBS games. The system is pretty intuitive and simultaneously difficult since you're almost always pushed on time limits. It has a somewhat non-linear story and lets you, as the Germans, launch attacks on mainland England and USA if you're good enough.
Much like Fire Emblem: Awakening, the Front Mission franchise, from what I remember, is a nice TRPG. Customize mechs and send them to war...control their movements and see if you can win the story missions. Always fun.

Some other ones I'd like to suggest (especially if you have a PSP/Vita):
Final Fantasy Tactics (War of the Lions or the original)
Ogre Tactics (Let Us Cling Together or the original)
Jeanne D'Arc
Ragnarok Tactics
The entire Disgaea series
Valkyria Chronicles 2 (on top of the original)
Rainbow Moon
La Pucelle
Phantom Brave
Front Mission Series
I've also been a huge fan of Ogre Battle and Ogre Battle 64. It's a bit different than the other games already listed though.
And heaven help you if you can speak/read Japanese - the Entire Super Robot Series.

Oh, and if you happen to like Panzer General (II) as mentioned previously, don't forget there were others in the same series (eg, Allied, Pacific, Fantasy, Star, People's, etc.)
Sorry for the long posts, it's been a favorite genre of mine.

love these games; x-com (enemy unknown+terror from the deep) was so much fun for putting your favourite flames players in the frontline...the combo of jarome iginla and barry manilow was unstoppable.
i'm actually playing panzer general 1 right now, like a mega ww2 chess game.
I really liked Front Mission on SNES, and LOVED Front Mission 4 on PS2.
Valkyrie Chronicles for PS3 is very good.
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars on 3DS was decent.

I haven't tried a lot on that list, but I have an un healthy obsession with the Ogre Battle series. The original is actually quite challenging at times, with a crap ton of secrets and I think 16 different endings? Lots of special characters to find along the way as well. If you like tactic based games then you should definitely be checking that whole series out (Ogre Battle, Ogre Battle 64 and the two Tactics Ogres). You can find them all on the Wii Virtual Console I believe, among other great classic RPG's.
If you are into the old school games, I would also recommend Shining Force 1, 2, 3 and CD. Great turn based strat game with your basic class set up. They aren't overly challenging, but they are a great play with a cool story line.
Also you should be keeping an eye on Unsung Story. It was funded through kickstarter and features Yasumi Matsuno who was the master mind behind FF:Tactics (heralded as the greatest tactics game of all time), also was a big part of Ogre Battle and Tactics Ogre, which TO would be regarded as the much more challenging but slightly less popular than FFT greatest tactics game of all time.
This thread should be stickied IMO, greatest game genre of all time!!
