I know a thing or two about the project.
The choice really was to hold up all the platforms that were ready for one that wasn't or to launch the ones that are ready. It isn't ideal but it is better than everyone waiting.

It's completely unusable for me on the three devices I've tried it on, so perhaps they should have held off a little longer.

Gwsurvey2012 pointed me to a Shaw community post talking about the state of Android handheld support and a much more descriptive reason for the delay.

Ah, very good Makes sense.
Got it running on the iPad and I'm quite impressed actually. It's certainly a MUCH more fluid way of getting around the system. Haven't had any issues with crashing at all.
It works on any portal in the house, you just have to select the one you want from the drop down menu. The serial number can be changed to a description which was nice to see.
I like it so far, seems pretty slick.

Wow...we wait all the time for this and it's not compatible with Android phones? C'mon Shaw...that f'n brutal.
I have heard of a number of users using the apk on their Android phones (Nexus 5 in particular) without issue. If someone has access to the apk, please PM me. Thanks.

Now there you go that would be a game changer. Just have your iPad in hand and anywhere in the house becomes a TV watching area.
I like the app. Not super sure if I will ever use it for more than a gimick. I like the gateway paired with the harmoney.
Now if they ever figure out streaming your phone man that would be something else. Given their history with DLNA something makes me think that will never happen or Telus will beat them to the punch again.

Can anyone use it as a remove (i.e. FF, Pause, Play)? All I can seem to do is start stuff on the PVR or change channel.

Known bug. Only channel changing and record start work. Working on an update.
I guess I will dump this to my tablet and pull the apk that way over to my phone. Hopefully they come out with phone support soon.

Yeah if only you could FF, Pause, etc I would use my phone over the clunky remote all the time.

As do I, but a remotes a remote when moving around the menu, I think this app makes that far more fluid and have an easier time moving down the guide looking for upcoming shows to record.
I hope they continue to develop it.

I guess what I mean to say is for now I think the Harmony is the better device overall for usability.
I have the RF/IR Harmony since my components are hidden. So I still need a power/volume remote, plus a remote to switch activities.
So I could just use the Harmony app and the Shaw app I guess, and switch. However, I have never found myself keeping my phone with me at all times TV watching. So a stand alone device does have its benefits.
I too hope they keep developing the app, I really do not hope they think this is it, and just do incremental bug fixes like they did with the Gateway system. They promised so much at launch with the Gateway (DLNA, WiFi for example) and delivered a partially useful guide app 4 years later.
So we will see, but for now I am keeping my Harmony, it has been totally worth the investment, and will be for the near future.

Totally agree, it's been a bit of a source of frustration to me as well with how little they have done with it.
What Harmony remote do you have? I bought one of the more basic ones a few years ago when I first got a big screen connceted to a HTiB. It's awesome. Couple years later I bought the exact same one at costco but for some reason, it's not as good. It look identical but seem to have issues with it sometimes.
May be time for a couple of new higher end ones

Well I have owned about 5 of them over 5 years for 3 TV's. I had the 890, then the Harmony One RF, now I have the Ultimate with RF and Smart Control.
Honestly the Ultimate has been the best of the bunch. I don't use the touch screen gestures much, but I just love the responsiveness. I found with the One and 890 sometimes I would have to click a few times over RF to get a response, the Ultimate never gives me issues. However, this maybe a RF issue and if you just need IR you probably are fine.
A very close second is the Smart Control. Just plain works, although it is RF/WiFi only which will work for 99% of setups. Plus you can hide your components. I would honestly recommend that one to you if it will work for your setup and you don't have more than 6 activities. It is around $100 and works awesome.

Is it worth upgrading to Gateway?
We only have one TV, but sometimes struggle with multiple recordings, PVR space, and that sort of stuff. Just not sure if I should wait until we have a bigger place and perhaps a couple TV's, or make the leap now. Is it overkill?

I wouldn't say so. You don't really need more than one TV to take advantage of the Gateway. Hook up and external drive to it (I hooked up a 1TB drive to mine) and then you have a ton of storage and the ability to record 6 feeds at once. It's awesome.
