reminds me of an episode of Hard Knocks where I think it was Ryan Tannehill (QB of Miami) didnt even know what division teams they were playing in or something like that

it's not something a guy needs, but I would imagine a lot more players that end up succeeding have a love of the game in general, not just have talent

I would take a gamble that he will be there between 10 and 15.

At six, there will probably be one of Ehlers, Nylander and Ritchie still available.

If the Flames kept drafting kids who had a great personality, the team would go nowhere fast.

Stajan is a nice guy, one of the nicest actually, and I get it, but almost anyone would take Malkin, Giroux, or even a guy like ROR over Stajan given the chance.

The Flames would be foolish not to take any of the top 4 available.

Edit: Treliving even talks about being careful as to not being enamored with a kid during the interview process. Around the 2:00 mark.

This kid has character. I like the idea of building by adding skill players with character.

while I agree with your general sentiment, I don't really get this part. I doubt the difference between, say, Draisaitl and Virtanen is as big as between Malkin and Stajan. Even if we ignore their NHL careers, Stajan was "only" a late 2nd round pick. Draisaitl and Virtanen are both top 10 prospects in this draft class.

Trade back from #4 to take him? Or trade up to get an additional pick in the top 10 to take him? Big difference IMO.

Leaving with just Virtanen (and a 2nd if thats what the trade worked out to) wouldn't be so promising compared to leaving with #4 and Virtanen.

It was more for effect. I wouldn't say there's going to be a night and day difference between a 3-4th overall and a 6-8th overall pick.

However, if the top 4 consensus presents itself undeniably, as it has for many scouts, sports writers, GM's, etc, then it would be poor judgment for the Flames to skip over them for Virtanen.

Virtanen seems like he'd be an excellent pick. sadly he wouldnt be an excellent pick at #4. If we are to end up acquiring the kid (and i hope we do) it would HAVE to be trading up back into the top ten. Perfect draft for Calgary would be taking one of the centres and then Virtanen. addresses two critical prospect depth issues and shifts the focus to building up our back end.
