It'll probably take that many to find 7 saying they want to play for Edmonton.

Because of Gaudreau and Arnold being at BC, I bet that very few teams have seen him play more than the Flames have.

I think it is quite possible that Buffalo or the Panthers take him with 31 or 32. They need elite goalie prospects in their systems. I think the Islanders will most likely take him at 35.

"The one thing that Dale does very well is he interacts with his scouting staff both pro and amateur with regard to what's coming up the pipeline and he does a great job managing the assets that we put forth to him," Luce told NHL.com. "There's no question that if the right deal were to come along Dale would definitely pull the trigger, but it will be a high price because it's the first overall pick.
"In the end it all comes down to basic asset management and Dale said that the pick is available for the right price. So we'll listen to the offers and see if the right price does come along."

"There's a lot of excitement in South Florida for this selection and what we could possibly bring to the organization and add to our already deep depth of prospects," Luce said.
He was asked the type of approach the organization will take.
"Once we put together a final list we draw various lines in the list to make a notation that at certain points in the draft this player is the best available and if he's on the board we'll select him because that's the proper asset-management move," Luce said. "We'll also have a select list for position and needs in the organization and we usually get to those in the mid-rounds when we start looking at what we have in the system, what's coming and who we need to sign.
"At some point Dale will ask, 'I'd really like to get position X type of player,' and we'll go to that list and say, 'OK, this guy is available.' Then it's up to myself and the scouting staff to say that we can take him now or maybe the next round, but we manage the list in that way so it's never just one strategy."
|
Interesting sounds like Dale Tallon drafts for position and not necessarily BPA.
Also article talks about how the Panthers came to decide on Barkov at #2

It's a personal opinion in a conversation, what harm is it?
He's also talking about two of the highest rated players that his own teams were/are in no position to attain outside of a trade.
I'm sure many GMs and staff had Nichushkin at #3, and just as many would take Ekblad at #1.

Anyone know how many interviews Buffalo or Florida have set up? 84 seems like a lot.

Why in the world does Edmonton need to interview 84 (!?) players? they have picks #3 and #91 in the top 100 and then 5 more picks in the rest of the draft.
Edmonton must have found some sort of loop hole where they can draft multiple times with the same pick.

Good point. I forgot about that. Seems more like they are trying to interview block the other teams.

The combine is more about finalizing draft lists, not only interviewing players that may be around your current picks.
Even though Edmonton doesn't have many picks in the first 3 rounds, it doesn't preclude them from trading for more picks from now til the draft.

Maybe they're trying to trade for additional picks...?
Seems like they need immediate help (especially on D) moreso than additional picks though.

They don't need immediate help as that would interfere with the master plan.
If your rebuild just hit the wall, what would you do?
Oilers cannot get anything of equal value for their young 'stars'.
Oilers don't have veterans to trade.
There are no forward prospects on the farm.
The defence prospects are not ready.
I'm curious what Oilers are planning for 2014/2015 season.

Ok and that's all very rational sureloss. I know Twitter doesn't send this information out but in case you haven't come upon this little nugget, "Edmonton is No Good" So they won't be trading for more picks in the first three rounds.

That and they haven't developed anyone worth mentioning in out side the first round. They don't exactly have the ammo to trade up into the second round since they don't have a third. Any player taken by the oilers will be at least 4 years from helping them with their development system.
