One thing I will say, while it's fairly easy to strike up a conversation with a girl (at least in my case), I remember the challenge was escalating it to the point where I felt I could ask for a number. I was never a fan of being rejected so I'd rather leave and assume I could have rather than confirm I couldn't.
I had no problem flirting with women, but pretty bad at receiving signals.

The trick is to not ask for her number but to tell her to give it to you. Rather than "hey, can I have your number, I'd like to take you out sometime." say something like "give me your number, I'm gonna take you out for a drink".

Yeah, taking the non-consensual approach to human interaction is such an upstanding way to go. You're a real pillar of society.

I'm in town for an interview, been here a few weeks/months and doing contract work. It's nice here, I wouldn't mind staying permanently in this city if they offer me full time.
Issue solved Maybe...

Jesus man give it a rest. She can still say "no thanks" to that and it doesn't have to end in assault. That's a perfectly fine sentence to weave into a converstaion and it doesn't have to be overly agressive. Sample:
"Well I'm new here, don't really know a lot of places"
"Well give me your number and I'll show you a couple of my favorite spots"
Girl can answer however she wants.
As for the earlier comparisons of racism vs sexism is not a good one IMO. The difference between a white man and a black man is the color of their skin (without taking into account any other socioeconomic or psychological differences). The difference between men and women is biological and we do think about things differently and react differently to situations based on those natural differences.
Saying "all women like to talk about themselves" is certainly sexist, but to think that there arent fundamental differences in the ways women view the world and the ways men view the world is incorrect. It's not say one is better than the other. But if people find a way to exploit those differences for selfish reasons, it could be douchbaggery or sociopathy, etc.., but I'm not sure sexist is the right term here.

That demanding women give you something instead of asking for it kind of has a rapey vibe to it.

Again, if that's what he meant then fine. The way he phrased it sounded a lot more like a demand than a request.

It's not rapey, but it is sexually aggressive.

We must be vigilant, it's a slippery slope from "why don't you let me get your number" to "I'M GOING TO NON CONSENSUALLY SHAME SPEAR YOUR FACE HOLE!"

The first half of this thread is great, the second half should be deleted from existence.

Gender binaries aside, what makes you think the way women and men view the world is solely based on biology and not socioeconomic factors?
