Yes there are quite a few. There are guys of Wotherspoon/Granlund's calibre definitely in the 2nd/3rd.

Juho Lammikko, who's looking to be a mid 3rd only had a handful less points than Granlund did in the same league/age and is 6-2 and fast.

Dominik Masin, D – Slavia Praha (Cze.)
Masin is getting a lot of buzz on a Czech team featuring bigger names Jakub Vrana and David Pastrnak thanks to his play at the under-18s. The captain of the squad – which surprisingly sat first place in Group B through four games – has been effective on the blueline and can play a variety of roles. Draft eligible in 2014.

Hard-nosed defensive defenseman who is positional strong and aggressive playing inside his limits to stop attackers. At this juncture, is only middle of the road in terms of passing, carrying, and mobility. He manages to do a solid job blocking shots, handling one on ones, clearing the crease, and sealing the opposition on the boards. He takes pucks away and reads play well. Hits with authority and makes the play out of the zone well. It is a question as to whether teams see a significant upside.

I find it baffling that people would want to trade Sven + for a mid first round pick in a draft year that is nothing special. The odds are that you MIGHT get a player as good as Sven with that pick. People's facination with draft picks are unrealistic, most of them don't become regular NHL'ers.

The issues are:

A) Is Sven going to match the expectations of what you expect from a player of his draft ranking?

B) Even if he is, do the Flames want to get a player of equal caliber who brings different things to the table?

I guess I don't see trades as a matter of getting rid of a bunch of junk to get something great from another team. More typically, they're a matter of exchanging players of equal caliber in order to meet the needs of the two teams involved.

It's not about wanting to trade a player. It's about seeing an asset you want, and recognizing you'll have to give up asset of equal value to get it.

Though Baertschi has underwhelmed this past season, he is far from a bust at this stage. You don't trade him for another draft pick unless some team is prepared to offer a lottery pick for him.

I think Baertschi will end up being an NHL player - maybe even a very good one - but it is just going to take more time for him to find his game at the NHL level. To trade hoping to acquire a mid 1st-round pick is completely pointless. The Flames are not a team that is prepared to challenge for the cup in the next few years, so he does have time to develop in the system. Patience must be given to every pick the Flames make.

Also, you have to look at it in terms of the 'big picture'. While Baertschi could very well have been passed by a number of prospects in the system at the moment (Granlund, Gaudreau, Reinhart), he can very well end up passing these players in the years to come. Different players have different trajectories. He may end up busting outright, or he may end up being a franchise-level winger. At this point, his ceiling as well as his floor are just predictions. Being in a 'deep' system that the Flames have (and will be adding to in the next few drafts) runs the danger of having some notable prospects passed in the depth charts, but it also allows for better development as they are surrounded by more skilled prospects while developing. This is a huge boon to long-term development of all prospects.

That is the oiler paradox. Draft picks are drafted players have more value until they hit the ice for the team. Also known as the "I'll take what is behind door number two because it could be the next anderson, coffey, gretzky, kurri or messier".

For those looking for an in-depth look at the draft, we've just released our 2014 NHL Draft Guide over at Future Considerations.

We're tossing a CP discount too. Information can be found in this thread: http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthr...08#post4777108

A) It depends on what your expectations are for Sven. In his draft year I saw plenty of reports which said that his upside was as a skilled top-6 winger. People who expect Baertschi to be an elite 1st line talent, especially at this stage of his development, have their expectations way out of whack. My expectations of Baertschi?: dangerous secondary scoring threat on a good team. I'm happy with that.

B) The mid-1st round of the 2014 draft doesn't look so great for top-6 forwards. The top-10 prospects look like they could all be decent offensive threats, but beyond that it's sketchy. Sure, these prospects look great in their romanticised scouting reports, but realistically you're looking at a lot of depth players and 2-way 3rd liners after the top 10. Trading Sven for a mid-1st-round pick this year is lateral at best, which is a risky proposition for any team.

Was about to make a thread about this, but decided to just continue this one.

Do you guys prefer prospects from the OHL, WHL or QMJHL? I for some reason have a preference with the OHL, not sure why.

Doesn't matter, they're all pretty similar at this point to be honest. The real question is CHL vs US College but even that is just whatever the preference is of the player. I know a poster like moon preferred College hockey to the CHL, he went on and on about it but I think both are good.

I think you got that backwards unless you're saying that on purpose just to enrage Moon when he can't reply.

eye-popping, shows what a phenom he's been against sub-par competition. His adjustment to the chl means he may have more to offer yet.
don't get me wrong i hope that the stain select this guy, leaving one of the sams for us. Although you gotta admit if he falls to us that's one heck of a consolation prize.

Wondering about the potential Centres available in the 2015 draft.

We all know about the big two, Jack Eichel and Connor McDavid... who could be up there beyond that? We keep hearing it's a deep draft at the top, and am wondering if the Flames end up in that 3rd - 6th last spot who could be our target as a top Centre if (for some reason) we end up passing on one this draft?

Noah Hanifin is some are saying is a once in a generation defenceman and should go top 3.

Kylington is a 16 year old D playing against men in the Swedish leagues and probably as of right now is the 2nd best D man in the 2015 class.

Extremely early to really even talk about this, but for centers Matthew Barzal, Colin White, Dylan Strome, Travis Konecny.

Again basing current draft strategy on preliminary rankings is complete foolishness. Next year this time some of those guys may have dropped to late 1st round picks.
