It would be nice to have some Canadian shows that are not absolute crap or boring as hell.
EDIT: Norway pays the most at $180.

So is Canada just missing the funding? Does Norway have some top notch programming being made? Serious question, it's a lot harder to answer since I'm guessing very few of us speak Norwegian.
The BBC also runs commercial free. If we take our $33 per capita and add it to CBC add revenues, how far off the $97 are we?

"Meaning, on the positive side, an end to the cross-country belly-aching from markets who don’t see their home team with any regularity because the dog-a$$ Toronto Maple Leafs or more culturally significant Montreal Canadiens have a Saturday night game (which they almost always do) in a larger TV market."
Man what province is this guy from?

Is that a household licence or a per person licence?
If there's an average of about one licence for every 3 people, that would still work out on a per capita basis.

The "tradition" was pissing fans off outside of southern Ontario by shoving the Leafs in their faces week after week regardless of how pathetic they were or how well other canadian teams were doing. Other "traditions" were not showing canadian teams when they were playing on Sat. nights and joining western games in progress because the Leafs pre-game ceremonies took an hour. The reason many don't care, CBC doesn't care. CBC and TSN have seriously missed the boat for quite a while. Looking forward to Sat. with Rogers at the helm.

Times change. The NHL is big business now and a publicly funded company simply can't compete using taxpayer dollars to outbid private broadcasters. Also as a Westerner I don't particularly look back at HNIC with fondness. The Saturday night double headers are only of the last decade and for the most part the tradition of HNIC is essentially Leafs and Habs every Saturday night not the other Canadian teams. Maybe some of you don't recall how bad the Leafs were in the 80's but I do and having to watch them get blown out on a Saturday night while at the same time having to listen on the radio to a great Flames/Islanders game wasn't something I look back at with fondness. Honestly think about a horrible team like the Oilers of today being shoved down the throats of Canadians every weekend as it was that bad. They care so much about us out here that they couldn't even be bothered to broadcast the 2006 Flames/Ducks playoff series in HD. When it officially ends for them I for one will not shed a tear.
As for Rogers I totally expect some brutal broadcasts but that's par for the course with a 2nd tier broadcaster. Most of us realize this was a poor decision by the NHL to hand over 12 years to Rogers but there's nothing we can do about it as the NHL cares about $$$ over what's best for Canadian hockey fans. That said we all knew the day would come when HNIC would no longer be feasible so we will all just have to get used to it.

Guys...I get it. I know things change. I simply am speaking of "tradition". It's something that has been around forever, many of us grew up with it and now it's going away. Everything changes. Just not always for the better IMO.

I don't think too many people care that MNF is no longer on ABC.

I do. Thought it was great on a major network like that. Especially loved the commercials during the broadcast.

Honestly I don't care about the CBC one bit, as long as the good talent (ie. Friedman and whoever puts together the HNIC montages) is poached by Rogers.

What Canadian taxpayers pay per capita for public broadcasting is pennies compared to other countries. Edit: Damit, I'm too slow.

The TV Licence in the UK is £145.50 per annum.
That is ~$260.
You'd have fricken coronaries if the Canadian government tried to pull off that ####.
Besides, if you wanted a comparable service, you'd have to pay a crapload more than that because the costs resulting from the geographical differences.
Besides, I reckon CBC provides a much better regional offering than the BBC.
