When you say racism do you mean racism against black people? Because there are a lot of races that participate in the winter Olympics.

I hear ya -- I was citing what Polak was referencing, but yeah --- the racism is unfortunately common in these big matches.

Haha I'm getting this "crap" from almost annual visits to Poland for the last 24 years. Racism and violence is still a very big problem over there. ESPECIALLY off the beaten path in Krakow.
The fact that its the olympics and specifically the winter games (more white people and no soccer) will hopefully make it a non-issue.
Im all for a krakow games by the way. Im just not delusional about the problems that maybe involved. On top of that, Poland would need to finish their highway network as even the expected expansion plans for the Krakow airport are still far from enough to cover whats needed for the games (even if you double the expansion).
Still I hope it works out.

If we are to go for 2026?
"The next Olympics to be awarded, a little more than a year from now, will be the 2022 Winter Games. Rather than going to the strongest bid, the games may end up going to the last city standing—a long list of potential hosts have given up on their Olympic dreams because the whole thing is one huge, useless waste of money."

I think the Olympics definitely CAN be a huge waste of money (Sochi, Montreal, etc...) but that doesn't mean it HAS to be. Calgary still gets great use from the facilities it built for the Olympics, to the extent that the majority of Olympic athlete training is done here. With these facilities already in place, Calgary could likely keep the cost relatively low.
Sochi essentially had to update the entire infrustructure of the city before it could host the games. They pretty much built everything from scratch and with no care for the cost.

This. It is what you make of it.
Honestly, some places bid for the Olympics that just shouldnt have, as evidenced by Sochi. They held the winter olympics in a borderline tropical zone and it was used as more of a political statement than anything and all of the costs were ignored, so yeah, it was a disaster.
Calgary profits to this very day from the '88 Olympics and I think Vancouver came out of '10 fairly well as well, I dont see any reason we couldnt do so again.
If Calgary hosted the Olympics again I think Edmonton would have a fit and thats almost worth it all by itself.

The fact that reportedly 30 Billion of the 50 Billion dollar budget went "missing" during construction also played a huge reason why those games shouldn't be considered the new normal.
Vancouvers 7 Billion is much more realistic, and according to this article, had a positive benefit on the area.

Well, come on, its Russia. If stuff like this didnt happen we would all be wondering why. Its part of the fabled 'Russian-factor,' its like a train-wreck, it keeps us all watching.

Oh yeah, I get that...I woudn't trust a Russian with my sandwich...I'm just saying that Sochi shouldn't be used as a reason for decent countries to host Olympics.

It's funny, but it seems when hosting the Olympics is actually put to a vote, the people of those countries appear to be completely disinterested in having the Games. I think in the very near future the Olympics will probably fall into a rotation of cities that will host, cities with the established infrastructure to handle an Olympics. But I think Sochi bust the bubble on cities bidding from the Olympics when basically starting from scratch. It's just way too costly, with not enough benefit, as many governments fall deeper into debt.

Pretty much. Especially when theres no other draw and no other perceivable benefit.

I would love Calgary to host another, but I also think it's folly to attach our last financial performance to any future hosting we do. Sochi is a massive outlier, but the cost has still become a bloated carcass since we hosted.

I don't think he mean "profit" literally. We still get a ton of use out of the 88 infrastructure.

Yes, we still use the Saddledome, we still have COP, the University still benefits from the expansion and additions, Olympic skaters still train at the Olympic Oval and on and on.

This is true, our winter Olympic training facilities are here for a lot of sports and they wouldn't be if we didn't have the facilities that were created during the 88 Olympics.
Take Sochi for example, will their athletes now all flock there and use Sochi as a training hub like Calgary is for winter sports? There is a big difference between the two. Same with Vancouver, the conditions are not ideal for using the facilities created. In fact the architects in Vancouver were very smart in transforming the Oval in Richmond for example to a multisport complex, it is a beautiful facility, that will in inevitably sink into the ground but that is another story. Now Whistler can host more events like World Cups for luge, bobsled, skeleton for example. Something they couldn't do before. Creating a legacy program from the Olympics is key to making a profit from hosting the Olympics.
