Well that's nice. I've eaten there a bunch of times. Why were they allowed to stay open for so long with that many infractions?

food standards are poorly enforced in Calgary. Source: working at over a dozen restaurants and bakeries. When you go to a restaurant in Calgary you really have no clue what the mental state of the person is cooking the food unless you see them cook it. Cockroaches in a Calgary restaurant? Seems about right.

Gross. I'm glad I haven't been there since the 90s.

I, thankfully, only ate there a couple of times. The last time I saw a dead turtle in with the rest of the turtles near the front. I told a couple staff members and none of them even responded to me when I told them. Never went back after that. Kinda like what Anthony Bourdain says, if a restaurant doesn't keep a bathroom clean and they know you are going to see that, imagine what the kitchen looks like.

I ate there a few times in the past ... I'm not sure if I had in the 2000's

Ate there 4 or 5 years and was ridiculously sick that night. I vowed to never go back (and I love me some ginger beef) and I never did.... good riddance.

Last time I ate there was 2002. Earned myself a night of diarrhoea and haven't been back since.

Is anybody else surprised to find out that there are cockroaches in Calgary? I have never seen one here; I had assumed it had something to do with our climate.
Which begs the question, how filthy does a place have to be to have cockroaches?

It happens occasionally in restaurants - I would guess they come over in shipments of food and can live in the heat of a kitchen?
Clearly they can't survive in the regular Calgary environment.
My dad used to do disaster restoration and would often go into kitchens that had been flooded. He regularly talked of seeing roaches.

You and me both, brother. But that crap they served was NOT ginger beef, more like ginger tire rubber.
I ate there only once and the only thing I liked about it was the turtle pond. Didn't notice any dead ones though.

No, not really. We found 2 in our Chinatown apartment after we had moved in. Restaurants on the main floor + filthy dumbwaiters on each floor, I am sure they spread fast. That was around 2002 or 2003.

A complaint was received regarding a live mouse seen in the dining area while customers were there,
We've seen a mouse running in and out of a hole in the wall at Peter's Drive-In. Likes fries.

I seem to remember (years ago) a condo complex on Richmond Road getting closed and called a literal "roach motel". No one was allowed in until it was dealt with. I remember being shocked that there were cockroaches here back then.

https://myhealth.alberta.ca/alberta/...ckroaches.aspx
In Alberta, the most common cockroach found in homes, apartments, restaurants, and grocery stores is the German cockroach. The German cockroach is usually about 1.3 to 1.6 cm (0.5 to 0.6 inches) long. During the day, cockroaches hide in groups behind baseboards, in cracks and crevices in the kitchen, and under stoves, fridges, and dishwashers.
