They're still pretty high on Shultz and I think they see a future in Marincin

Plus, they have a few Gio's just waiting to make the leap!
I can honestly see them passing on Ekblad if he's available for two reasons; they've been pretty open about how much they like Drasatl(sp), and they're the oilers lol. I wouldn't be shocked if during interviews Ekblad says something abiut how he doesn't want to go there.

Leafs, Pens, Canucks, Oilers, Sharks, Caps could be teams looking to make drastic changes.
I could see several big names on the market this summer. I wonder what the Flames are planning to do. Last year they made the brutal Tanguay trade and did the right thing keeping their 3 1st round picks. They were rumoured to have the chance to trade for Seguin at the cost of Monahan and Gaudreau which would have been a mistake.
This all happened pre-Burke. Burke has publicly stated the organization is looking to improve the on ice personnel this summer. Treliving has stated none of his moves are for the short term and it will all be with the long term vision in mind.
Calgary has a couple options in my opinion. They keep doing what they are doing and pick up pieces like Galiardi, Russell, Colborne. They could however chase the young player that is on the market like say Evander Kane or Brad Marchand? Will they replace Cammy? Will they be able to make a Regehr like trade where they pick up a good player cheap while taking on a bad contract?
I am so excited for the potential this summer brings for the Flames as the rebuild continues

Your right, they're high.
Marincin might play but Shultz is nothing to speak of.

If one team was to pass up Ekblad when they had the chance to draft him, it would be Edmonton. Edmonton is no good.
Wrong thread? Nope. Edmonton is no good on pretty much all of the threads that we post and are never to be considered off topic.

"I think there is probably a consensus on the top five, but I think there might be 30 different lists of what order," Treliving said.

I think this quote is significant, as it seems to suggest the Flames probably won't be looking at a Ritchie/Ehlers/Nylander since the 'consensus' top five seems to be Ekblad/Samx2/Draistaitl/Dal Colle.

I agree. I don't think the Oil pass on Draisaitl is he is there at their pick.
Centre is, by far, their biggest on ice/in the system weakness

Musil? Oilers fans seem to think Marincin is going to be a top 4 guy. Their depth isn't that great but really no worse and maybe a little better than the Flames defensive prospects which is why the Flames could use Ekblad just as much as the Oilers.

I know Draisatl is physically bigger, but doesnt Bennett play a much bigger game than him? Why would the Oilers want to add a big/soft player?

Tallon said he isn't ruling out anything, including taking a player at No. 1, accepting a deal to move back in the draft or packaging his No. 1 and other assets in an effort to acquire a top player.
"When I look at my team, I would like to add a couple of top-notch veteran (defenders)," Tallon said.
Would we consider trading Gio for the #1 pick? Maybe other parts would need to be added.

I was thinking something like Russell, 4th overall, and Colorado's 2nd. I don't think Tallon will get two top notch vet D men in their prime.

Maybe if the Flames are lucky, Tallon considers Wideman a top-notch veteran defender? The Flames can throw in the pending UFA Butler as well to ice the deal.

Debatable if the number 1 overall pick in this draft would be a centerpiece.

Gio is 30 years old and just had a Norris worthy season. He could still be a good defenceman when the Flames are ready to be competitive again. It's not like he's 38 and a couple years away from retirement.

I was actually thinking it is possible that both teams would see flipping Wideman for Campbell as adding all around value to the deal.
Florida gets younger, and only adds $2M to their books, for an extra years. As a cap budget team that does not attract allot of FAs that could be vary positive.
Calgary inches closer to the Cap Floor, gets less term + probably some extra trade value in the deal.
Maybe we could see something crazy like
Wideman + Russell + Klimchuk for Ekblad + Campbell.
Keep our own 1st, and draft a Sam.
A guy can dream.

People complain that we didn't trade Iginla when his value was high. Gio will never have higher value that he has right now.
Gio could be a contributing part in 5 years when the Flames are competing for the cup, but he won't be elite then. He might not be elite next season. He has only one elite season in all his years.

I'd make that trade immediately even today if Dallas is on the phone. As good as Money is and Gaudreau could be, Seguin is a 22 year old top line center in the league.
