Just for fun (not sure if already posted) but here are some early reactions from 2011 after the Flames drafted 5'6 137lbs LW John Gaudreau:

Not sure how much more filling out our guy can do but growing 5 inches and putting on 40 pounds (to achieve NHL size) seems a stretch. Hope I'm wrong and the kid is a steal.

Glad to see no "but" from Treliving. As a Flames fan I was expecting to read "but needs to be better on his..."

Expectations were high from day one. Just needed to learn how to spell his name.

I feel like calling him Gretz from now on, just to irk all the curmudgeons in this thread with questionable reading comprehension.

That is a great article, for those who didn't read it they also go on to talk about Monahan and Backlund, I liked this part about #23.

Quote:
"It's been good with Sean," Treliving stated. "Knowing the coach, Dave Tippett, values smart, reliable, two-way play and I think you've seen Sean earn trust from the coaches there. That speaks volumes. Dave doesn't just give ice time away. You have to earn it. You have to be intelligent. You have to be responsible on both sides of the puck.

Good work boys! Edit: Not to derail the thread sorry forgot this was a JH thread, but worth mentioning, read the article.

St.Croix - 0 points in 13 AHL games last year (did have decent production in the ECHL though).

I think the question that needs to be asked now is... How many Flames tickets will be sold because of JG next year? Anyone who was thinking of giving up their season tickets have likely changed their mind.

He's likely to be the funnest player to watch on the ice next year. Add that to all of our other over achieving prospects and we may be in for a treat!

How many were going to give up tickets in the first place? Last year was hella entertaining and I don't believe people were about to dump tickets en masse for that performance. JG is just icing on the cake for next year.

So I check TSN for highlights and they totally skip Gaudreau's two beautiful assists and only show his one meh assist.

TSN can blow me.

Friends were making fun of us for getting tickets last year, because the Flames suck so bad. By the end they were all asking to come to games. Was the most entertaining hockey I've seen the Flames play since 2004 run by far. And as you say, JG coming in is icing on the cake next year. Should be an awesome season!!

I still think that unless he absolutely blows everyone away at training camp (which he could easily do), he at least spends a little bit of time in the AHL. If anything, just so it doesn't look like they're just handing him a spot.

Agree. Unless he's lights out at camp he should start the year and spend lots of time in AHL.

I thought they also picked the wrong goal for the Highlight of the night. Shore's goal was nice, but I thought Gaudreau's was nicer.

That's what I like about our management and coaching is nothing's given and everything's earned... Gonna be watching both teams like a poop-hawk next year that's for damn sure!

Johnny = Gretzky
Monahan = Nieuwendyk
Brodie = Niedermayer
Wotherspoon = Suter
Gillies = Roy

Screw tempering expectations.

NHL players no longer have the imagination to give interesting nicknames. They add either an 's' 'er' or 'ie' to the first syllable of the last name, and call it a day.

Colby

I don't know what Smid's nickname is, but I'm going to go out on a limb and guess 'Smids' or 'Smidder'.

Whatever happened to nicknames that came out of a person's characteristics, or a funny incident?
