So, with all this love for Johnny would you trade him for:
1. Top 3 pick in this draft
Or
2. Kane
No to both, because I don't think anyone knows how good a player he could one day be. I think the likelihood that he will be very good, and the possibility that he could be better than either trumps what Kane provides now, or whom the Flames could draft in the top three.

Yeah you know, a year ago or so some of the trade talk could kind of be justified, but at this point you HAVE to see what you have in him before you even consider that. It is much more valuable to the franchise to build their own star player then trade away an exciting prospect for someone else's. Especially one noted to have his own problems and issues with playing in a small Canadian market.
I thought (like you) that he meant Pat Kane first. I still might say no. Definitely no to Evander.

1 - 2014 top 3? No
2015 top 3? Yes
2. Probably not
I'm probably on the temper my expectations side of things, I've never overly gushed about Gaudreau but you can't deny his talent and drive. The kid is also just a winner too. Hard to trade him away and wouldn't do it lightly.
I think people keep confusing generational/elite "talent" with generational/elite "player". Being the former doesn't mean he will turn into the latter...but I'm not sure most here are really implying that.
I've watched the Flames since 89, and don't recall anyone pulling off these kinds of smart creative moves since Sergei Makarov. Nylander had his moments, and Huselius had his moments...but I don't remember the raw skill to be quite this high with those two. Kent Nillson or Hakan Loob sounded like that too, but honestly, I never really saw them play, so I can't say.
Will he turn into a star? Who knows...but even if he never plays another NHL game, from a purely talent level, I can't think of anyone to compare him to in the last 2 decades.
I like that comparison with Makarov. I am trying to figure out where he will land. I honestly think he can be a top 6 player that can contribute. Do I think he will be elite player frequently ending in the top ten scoring in the NHL? Probably not. Kudos to him and bonus for us if he ends up as a Kane/Datsyuk type caliber player. Those are the types of players he has been compared to as a high water mark and neither of those are generational.
Living here in Oiler land, I have to put up with a lot of smack talk from these fans. After this past season, I had said that we would make the playoff ahead of the Oilers.
With what we have now, what we are able to acquire (Free agency and trades), what this kid brings plus what we fetch at the draft, I'm thinking I might start putting some money where my mouth is.
That skill level is freaking nuts! I love the quote from Kermitology and the other one, "redonkulous", says it all.
Hehehe you should! I do it all the time I've gotta represent the C of Red here in the City of Champignons too xD

Actually, if Gaudreau was a Kings prospects and Kings fans were talking about him being a generational talent, I would point and laugh at them.
If people enjoy getting delirious about this stuff, that's cool. But I hope those people have the decency not to mock Oilers fans who do the same thing. If wild-eyed projections look goofy on them, they look goofy on us.
Oh no, mocking Oilers fans. Maybe you just don't get why they're mocked *by the fans of their number one rival*?
Johnny impressed me today, unequivocally. However, Draisaitl impressed me just as much, as he dragged Germany right along with USA on the scoreboard. 2 goals and an assist for a kid who isn't drafted, on the men's world scale is pretty enticing.
As the poll in the Craigs List thread suggests most may not agree with me, but to me, the best outcome would be a line that included both of these studs feeding each other all game long.
It's funny that I was having similar thoughts while watching the game. At the very least, we don't have to worry any longer that there is a drop off after the third pick in the upcoming draft. Any of the top 3 centers in the draft will look good with Johnny.

1. Top 3 pick in this draft
Or
2. Kane Evander
Absolutely not to both. You only strike gold every once in a while with a later round pick - you don't let those players go. Johnny Hockey should be in a Flames uniform for a long time.

Just had a drunk thought:
Since we all like Happy Gilmore, I'm thinking about Shooter Mcgavin where he mocks Happy all the time but then behind the scenes he tries and practices doing the same thing..
That's going to be the veterans on the other teams practicing JohnnyThings in their off time... GOOO JOHNNY
I figure that no matter how Johnny turns out, I'll be reacting the same way no matter what I do now. So might as well be happy, get excited, and giggle hysterically at the beauty of these plays! At least I'll enjoy life now, who knows or cares about the future?

You can argue about his potential all you want but I'll tell you what; this upcoming Flames season has got to be the most exciting start we've had in as long as I can remember. The idea that we will have young talented playere that work hard to earn their ice time is a rare thing for us. I actually have a desire to buy tickets and watch it live.
Gaudreau is a significant part of that so bicker all you want I can't way to see Johnny at the dome make defenders dizzy with his wizardry.

By my count that is 2, yes count them two wizards in the Flames arsenal that they can deploy. A wily Gandalf type in Jiri Hudler, and a young brazen Harry potter type in Mr. Johnny Hockey. These are bright days indeed.
As for the "temper expectations" crowd, temper your own darn expectations and let the rest of us be happy for once. Anywho, this year that Gaudreau has put together is Legend.....wait for it....ary!

I think Gaudreau and Hudler are mischievous hobbits looking for adventure. One is older but still has some travel left in him, Hudler will be Bilbo, one is younger and hungry for excitment, Gaudreau = Frodo.
Burke is Gandalf. Aragorn is clearly Monahan.
