Why in the hell are people putting Backlund on the 1st line? He had a decent year and a decent Worlds but lets be honest here, Backlund will be one of the best two way 3rd line centres in the NHL. If our #1 centre is Backlund we are in serious doodoo.

He's our best centre right now. He is our number 1 centre, and yes - we are a bad team.

Good point. Definitely want big Ern to stay on as long as he is willing. He will be more and more important to this team as kids like Monahan, gaudreau, baertschi, poirier, etc. begin to take over as part of the core of the team. Plus he's a great guy on and off the ice.

Not sure if serious...
Obvious answer is because he's arguably our best centre right now. If you're going to come back upset acting like it's a foregone conclusion Stajan should be listed first, it's really a lateral move. Either of them could be listed on our top line at this point and it's just semantics.
And if by "deep doodoo" you mean we are / will be one of the worst teams in the NHL... welcome to right now. That's exactly what's happening in year one of the rebuild, and next year won't be much different.
Unless we land a clear cut No. 1 Center (doubtful), what's the problem with people listing Backlund in that spot? He's very likely to receive those kind of minutes here this coming season, which will be another difficult year for us in the standings (as is expected).

No, he isn't. Monahan did more last year as a rookie than Backlund did his previous whole career practically. If we are going to suck next year anyhow let the kid with the upside of a #1 play the first line minutes.

Monahan/Backlund/Stajan are all interchangeable at this point in time.
Want to ensure Monahan has a sophomore slump? Pile on the pressure by making him the clear-cut #1. He's great but he's not ready to be The Man.
May as well share the workload between the 3 established centres, especially as our top 6 wingers are also similarly interchangeable.

Yeah could obviously change if we draft a C in the draft.. But I definitely see Backlund as part of the picture.

I wonder if Backlund has player his way into a very valuable trade chip? He comes cheaply at $1.5M is still a RFA and has really improved over the last couple years. These are all reasons why he should stay but teams looking to shed salary could perhaps allow the flames to win a trade? If a team is looking to do what Boston did with Seguin maybe the Flames use Backlund and cap space as primary assets?

I'm against trading Backlund and have been since the start of the year. I wouldn't want to give Monahan or Stajan first line minutes next year. We won't be able to sign someone like Stanstny.
My WANTED lineup for next year is
Cammalleri - Backlund - Vrbata
Gaudreau - Monahan - Colborne
Baertschi - S. Reinhart - Glencross
Bouma - Stajan - Byron
Wolf - McGrattan
Brodie - Giordano
Smid - Franson
Russell - Stone
Cundari
Rämö - Greiss
I don't thunk this is the off-season to make any huge moves. The few candidates I'd have to bring in (apart from the ones in my roster) are Beau Bennett, Brandon Saad, Johnny Boychuk, Adam McQuaid are just a few.
I see our roster like this
At centre we should keep it the same. Backlund, Monahan, DP, Stajan. Monahan getting slightly harder minutes.m
On the wings of teh current players we should have 6/10 spots. Baertschi, Gaudreau, Bouma, McGrattan, Colborne, Glencross. Then guys like Wolf and Byron and M. Reinhart and Granlund can compete. That's where we sign some FA's. I'd
Ike to bring back Cammy.
On the blue line Wideman, Butler should be gone.mopens 3 spaces.
In net we need a Backup.
We should go for one of the many top prospects in 2015. McDavid, Eichel, Hanfin, Barzal, Kylington, Konecy (Konecy with Gaudreau would be so fun to watch).
Then in that or the next off-season we could go after someone that's in a Seguin situatuin or a Kane situation or even a JVR situation. Thise usually come out of nowhere so I won't speculate. One name I can throw out is Brayden Schenn becomes movable with Laughton and Cotourier and a few others. Perhaps a forward out of Colorado. Trick is a player under 25 that we could get cheaper than his value.
So if you take my roster
Cammalleri - Backlund - Vrbata
Gaudreau - Monahan - Colborne
Baertschi - S. Reinhart - Glencross
Bouma - Stajan - Byron
Wolf - McGrattan
Brodie - Giordano
Smid - Franson
Russell - Stone
Cundari
Rämö - Greiss
Look at
Stajan ----> Arnold/Reinhart/Granlund/Knight
Cammalleri -----> Klimchuk
Vrbata ------> Young forward
Glencross -------> Poirier
Colborne -----> K.Hayes
And
Smid ----> 2015 DP
Russell ----> Wotherspoon
Franson -----> Sieloff
Cundari -------> Kulak
And
Rämö -----> Gillies
Greiss -----> Ortio
And hopefully
Klimchuk - 2014 DP - Poirier
Gaudreau - Monahan - Young Forward
Baertschi (who becomes tradable) - Backlund - Hayes
Reinhart - Arnold - Colborne
Ferland
Brodie - 2015 DP
Wotherspoon - Giordano
Sieloff - Stone
Kulak
Gillies
Ortio
If all goes well
Maybe trade Baertschi when hos value goes up for a more truculent forward. Brett Ritchie comes to mind

Russell - Fayne
Ramo
Greiss
Spares - Wolf, Byron, Butler
